Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Alternative Double Straps on the cheap (real cheap)

Saw this on the web and am intrigued to say the least. Has anyone actually tried something like this? Can't imagine they'd be as durable as leather/suede but I could be wrong...

Id ride them. But it really makes no sense, who would buy the zip ties over straps :wtf:
its just as easy to buy some straps or have an extra cheap set for back ups in a pinch.

i wouldn't build bike this way, but there are plenty of cable ties that are more than strong enough for this. i guess if i were in a pinch or needed a temporary solution i would be open to it.

fyi: white/natural color cable ties have no uv protection. if you intended to do this, black would be the only way.

But I would NOT use zip ties as straps. Those would probably not hold at all. Maybe I could see you using them in a pinch if a strap broke, but those aren't realistic at all. You couldn't tighten them more than once, you can't loosen them. Those ratchet systems aren't very strong.

The plastic that makes zip ties becomes very brittle very easily when exposed to sun light.

I've done that, shoelaces, and braided hemp twine..

Now I have fancy Schwinn nylon straps.

A lot of zip ties I've used have been poor quality then. The ratchet mechanism would often fail and slip out if you exerted enough force outwards on them. I guess the industrial strength ones would be more reliable. But, as we agreed, not really feasible for a long term solution.

Imagine riders at the track tightening down their zip ties before a race, and then having them cut off afterwards.... then repeat. ha

lol i cary zipties with me just in case i break a strap on a ride, but i wouldent use it permanently, doesnt look all that great, but if u dont care, then sure why not

Come to think of it, I'm sure these have less flex than even the most robust of leather straps. You might have something to this idea. Quick, to the track!

i remember getting into bikes and thinking how crazy it was that people would pay $100 for straps (I now own Toshis...). I always thought it would be perfectly fine to just tie some rope or zipties or leather bits around there. Props to people who don't get caught up in hyper consumption like me...

hmm. i was putting the zip ties in my bag everywhere i go incase i feel like being dexter

but i guess this is a good use too, but that means i won't have a victim tonight =(
