In terms of the sturdiness of the frame, fork, and wheels, there is far more variance within the categories than between them.
The real difference is you can put much larger tires under a cross bike, which does make it better through rough stuff.

The forks are definitely beefier allowing beefy tires to be mounted, as well (pictured studded Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires):

His fork may just be wider, but the fork on the Tricross is the definition of "beefy"

Well compared to my Giant's fork, which is the only other bike I have to compare to, the Ridley's fork is wider and heavier.
Many of the contemporary replacement forks carried by online retailers show that the cross forks are heavier than road forks. Hence, I use the word "beefier". I have to admit, though, that I usually only look at carbon.

Have you ever been to a cross race or watched one online? The bikes take a real beating and keep on going. That's precisely why I bought a cross bike to use as my commuter a few years ago. NEVER had any problems on Atlanta's crappy streets or maneuvering over/around/through the potholes.
