Mountain Biking - Fenders?

Who needs them? What kind are you using now? What would be the "Ideal" fender for your bike? Would you like to see a new product that would keep all the water and mud off you backside and upfront?

Sometimes I use a down tube fender if it's sloppy enough out. Does your cross bike have fender mounts? You'd have a wider choice of fenders that way. None of my mountain bikes have fender mounts, so limited to the type that mount under the fork crown with a wedge, down tube fenders, or seat post mount fenders. There's plenty of all these kinds of fenders on the market now, can't see what "new" product would be necessary...what are you thinking about?

We are researching a new fender design that will be durable and inexpensive and resolve some of the problems associated with current products on the market. Perhaps something that will attach to the monostay and not on the seatpost itself. Combination of durable plastic fender attached with a steel bracket! We are looking for your suggestions and ideas. What are your requirements.

We would like to put a product on the market that will last more than a month before it breaks! Something with a 5 year or lifetime warranty. AND something that doesn't cost you a fortune.

I'm going to offer my opinion: this is the mountain bike subforum of Bike Forums. Mountain bikes that are used for actual mountain biking are almost never equipped with fenders. If you are riding a mountain bike on the road, that does not mean you are mountain biking, it just means you are road riding on a mountain bike. If that's the way you use your mountain bike, that's fine, and you may want fenders. But the commuting subforum would be a more appropriate subforum to discuss it. Again, just my opinion.

I've a backscratcher that I run for slush days. I'll put it on some trails that have a lot of year-round muddy sections around springs and the like. I've had it for about 8 years, I think, so durability's good. I just try to wheelie over the mud to keep it off my face. I stay off the trails when they're nothing but mud.

I have crud catchers. I like them very, very much. The only complaint I would have about them is the band isn't quite long enough to get around over-sized, goofy-shaped tubes like you might find on a carbon or aluminum bike, but that's pretty easy to fix. Luckily for me, I picked them up with the intent of using them on my trendy hipster steel 29er and they're perfect for that.

Since I started this thread for a specific reason and that was to gather others opinions, I just felt you were a little off base! My apologies if I ruffeled your feathers!

The pal thing is a bit much. What I'm telling you is that there are dozens of people in the commuter forum who often like to equip their bikes, including mountain bikes, with fenders. The touring forum as well. If you want to talk about fenders, I think you'll do better there.

You come in looking for our opinions/advice... and then you give a terrible attitude, and try to tell us were wrong, and "not as well biked... etc."
I personally hate fenders, it's more to break/worry about, more things to catch on branches, something more than can jab me if I crash somehow, and some of them look completely stupid. We are MOUNTAIN bikers, and the MAJORITY of us bike in the dirt for a reason... we don't mind getting dirty... we wear clothes that we WANT to get dirty, and have towels and blankets in our vehicles for the ride home...

So take the advice and go to the commuter/touring forums, where people ride in wet/muddy conditions to and from work, and would not LIKE to get all dirty.

The more mud on me and the bike, the better... it's like a badge of honor.

Hahaha, newbie logic again! A guy who doesn't mountain bike telling a mountain biker what other mountain bikers do based on one vendor thread on MTBR!

Fenders are for panty waist sissys.............and it seems we have a few around here.

Some of Us ex-moto guys kinda miss fenders - - they were what make an off-road bike an off-road bike to us: big, high fenders. But, really, it's kinda pointless on a bicycle; no roost and most of the high fronts on the market are too short to really do any good. I've used little bobbed rear fenders on frame designs that put the rear shock right in the mud-path of the tire . . . and I can see the value of a small crown-to-fork-arch flexy on REAL muddy/wet days, but that's about the extent of it.

Sounded like it. So, what are your ideas for a fender, rather than just get ours? What ones have you used, what did you or did you not like about them? Are you talking about using them on that road bike of yours with the fat saddle or what?

I suppose you're allowed to have an opinion, no matter how misdirected. It's the use of the collective "we" (as if you speak for all mtbers) that is mildly unsettling (albeit quite humorous) to those who understand the scope of your knowledge and experience.

I also added "Majority" so it doesn't include everyone.

After my 10 mile ride today in 4 inches of snow, slush mud, and road salt, I can still say, sorry no need for fenders... I was wearing shorts, and knee warmers as well.

The salt leaves a rather invigorating taste in my mouth -_-

I want a rear fender that works

After the next elections, yank an 18x24" sign outta the ground and cut a few slats from it. Zip tie one to your rack (like an extension) and the stoker's back will stay a little cleaner. Won't do much for stoker's feet, tho.

I use SKS fenders front and back. Easy to take off, and quite durable. Looks pretty cool to me as well - looks moto....crossy. Sorry, but I hate having skunk marks on my back when the trail is moist/muddy and hate mud in my face and eyes.

And just for the heck of it, I'll put in my input to the OP's question as well: I use the one bike I own for every kind of riding I do, including trail riding, urban, and commuting. So, yes I would like to have a rear fender (the down tube seems to catch almost everything up front when I'm commuting), BUT, and this is where I'm probably different than 99% of other commuters out there, I wouldn't spend the money on some overpriced prefab piece of plastic and steel that cost $2 to make. If I ever decide to get a fender, I'll just make my own. Pretty aesthetics would be nice, but that's not the point of the bike. So far on wet days, I've either driven instead or worn a rain suite over my work clothes. It's not ideal but it works. When I'm not commuting and just riding for fun, I don't care about getting dirty. I'm going to get dirty whether there's a fender or not, and it would just be extra weight to huff up the hills. In spite of that, I would be unlikely to remove a fender unless it snapped off and on very easily.

On my main bike I have a downtube mudguard that I leave on the bike, and I put a rear fender on during the wetter part of the year. On my older (now a loaner) bike, I have a pair permanently mounted.

Why would anyone else care about how I set up my bikes, if they don't have to ride them? If I showed up for a ride with fenders on my bike, would you shun me?
