Commuting - <sigh>...paradise...... The Waltz of the Bikes (video)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Beautiful!

Not a helmet in sight. How irresponsible! (I'm joking)

I actually like the potential we have in the USofA even better. We don't have to sit up straight or ride on the sidewalks. Not to start a bike lane debate, but I like riding on the street, fast, as part of the traffic flow. I envision something even better for some USA cities in the future when fuel prices get jacked up for good in the not-so-distant future.

Nice find. Thanks for posting. They sure look graceful and relaxed.

Yeah, I was loving the no helmet in sight thing as well. I guess its just safer since everybody is biking.

About the streets though, don't you think its probably safer their way? As opposed to riding in traffic with cars? I would love to be going to work or running my errands and to have other bikers along with me, as opposed to cars whizzing by at 60-70km/hr (45mpr?)

That video warms my heart. I actually really like the idea of those front-loading kid carriers - could be useful for hauling stuff!

Looks like panniers are starting to catch on over there...I noticed quite a few. I always love to see vids from cyclists Valhalla.

Wow, nice! I love the public bike parking. Lack of safe bike parking keeps me from doing more errands on my bike :(

Nice video. I was there a couple of months ago, absolutely beautiful to just the people and their bikes. Thanks for sharing!

That's because they don't have to worry about being ass ended by an Acura.

Re-grade every street in North America to pancake-flat and modify all of our climates such that it never gets warmer than 75 or colder than freezing and things might start to look more like that. It'd probably only cost a few trillion and have enormous environmental impact.

That, combined with never traveling faster than 8mph, would take care of the sweat issue.

Of course, you'd have to give up on the "secure bike parking" notion... theft over there is reportedly sky high, and you don't own a bike so much as rent one.

I don't get it. What exactly makes that video so special?

Oh wait... It's probably because I ride in that everyday, that it doesn't feel special to me anymore.

Though, what you don't see in the video are the irresponsible, and nearly ******** cyclists. There are loads of them blasting through red lights nearly colliding with cars, trams and other cyclists. Not to mention the same kind of cyclist that doesn't give other cyclists the needed space and nearly knock them of their bikes. Trust me... Riding in the Netherlands isn't all that great....

actually, if you look pretty early in the video you'll see two morons: one cuts in front of a car to go down a side street, the other cuts directly in front of a bus/tram.

I'm with Joey. I *like* riding on the street, and I really like having the option of moving faster than the dull single digits everyone seems to be going. my commute is relatively tiny at 7 miles each way, but would take at least twice as long if I was stuck in that lackadaisical flow. My two wants at this point are fewer undulations/ridiculous 5+" deep potholes out of nowhere, and perhaps a few actual bike lanes on key arteries into Downtown where my only other option is to go up 20% grade residential streets, adding an hour+ to my half hour trip.

man, it would be nice if the temps stayed in the 70's all year round here

Good point. First time I checked the video I missed those two...

Wait a second... Are you saying it's in the 70's all year in the Netherlands? If so, that's a big mistake.

Its certainly not the 70's all year round, but I don't think it ever hits -20C or +35C like it does in other parts of the world. They have a pretty decent climate for cycling

It's not the climate, it's the attitude and the infrastructure. If it was the climate, we would have a lot more bike commuters where I live, that is for sure!

It's because everyone is hopped up on drugs and just got done with a prostitute. Easy to be calm then.

So the solution I take from the video is, we need legalized drugs and prostitution like Amsterdam.
