Mountain Biking - Where is your favorite Trail?

I'm stuck at the office NOT doing work and thinking about riding! My wife and I did a night ride last Friday and had a blast! I'm hoping we can do some more riding this weekend, but the honey-do list keeps getting longer! Oh Well!

Oh yeah, back to topic!

Describe your favorite trail (or place to ride) and location! My wife and I have ridden throughout Florida, some in Georgia, Alabama, a lot in North Carolina, a little in Colorado and in Washington. Oh yeah in New Hampshire too!

My favorite trail/trip was one we took about 4 years ago. Wow! Has it been that long? Anyways, the trail is known as "The Fish Hatchery" it's in the Pisgah Nat'l Forest in Brevard, NC. We met some friends (and friends of friends) and decided to do a shuttle run to the top of the trail. We started off at the trail head and did a smooth singletrack to the first stream. There was a switchback and some steps right before the log bridge! Sweet, technical and scary! The first time I did it I rode off the log and fell into the water! It was chilly and basically just pissed me off! I climbed back to the top and rode down again! Everyone was impressed that a rider from FL had technical skills! The rest of the trail was all singletrack that was a blast! Near the end the trail opened up and crossed another stream (shallow, but wide!) It was refreshing blast at the end of a long run! Then to top it all off, the trail followed the edge of the stream and had a series of whoop-de-doos! I was having a ton of fun catching air and showing off my BMX talents and riding along some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable! Couldn't have been a better day of riding!

My favourite trail/ride has to hark back to my early days of my MTBing, when I used to live in Bournemouth in the south of England. Being 16 at the time, any excuse to get out on the bike with friends was taken, and usually we'd end up on the Dorset Coast Path..riding about 40 miles offroad in a day..in some pretty fantastic senery.

There was one ride that stood out from the rest...we woke up especially early to tackle the path...we saw the sun rise over the water, and watched it dip into the sunset....caked in mud, and our bikes weighing 50lbs +by the end of it....we ended up in the pub, toasting our feet by a gorgeous open fire :)

That still remains the best trail...even beating a recent Mt Snowden ride.

Locally, Caesers Creek SP here in Ohio is great for relatively technical stuff.

Scioto Trails SF is an excelent choice for all-day epics


Best trail I ever rode was pretty much everything on the southern plateau at Snowshoe WVa. Start at the top of the mountain on red gate road, cross a trail and enter Down 'n In. Keep bearing right for a mile or two and once you hit the Plunge, you'll either die or have had the best time of your life!! Wouldn't have it any other way.

I really haven't ridden too many trails. When I lived in the Detroit area Pontiac Lake was were everybody rode. There were some pretty big hills, fun but scary. It was nice, not too terribly scenic though.

Where have you ridden in Georgia? Anywhere in Northeast Georgia? Though I've lived in Athens, GA for three years, I've yet to get out on some trails. Definitely time to change that.

I love oak mountain (b'ham,al). It is a great trail and has a little bit of everything. MIJoe: as far as trails in georgia you might go over to the tandem part of this forum and ask Mr Livingood.He lives in the atlanta area i think and seems to know a lot about the trails over there. And he has a heck of a dual susp mtb tandem!

I haven't been on many trails because there's kinda the issue of getting there first to actually go biking, sooo for now I just stick with the Oswegatchie Hills. It's not really an established park or bike trails or anything like that... it's kinda something that only the locals know about. I think that it's really neat biking throughout there because you're beside the river. You can see the hills right across the river, I live on the opposite side of the river from the trails. It's really nice. Even on cold and windy days, the trees protect you from the wind and well, it's not exactly warm, but once you start biking you get warm. It's really cool too because there are so many trails in there that I didn't even know about! I don't even think that other people knew about it. It just so happened that me and my friend decided to explore a little, like usual, and we found all of these new trails that we have YET to explore! We usually spend like 5 hours biking in the hills. I never knew the forest was THAT big. It's amazing!! It's a lot of fun too!

Well I guess that it would not make any differnce as to where my fave trail is..(being in Oz an all !) but ..I live 5 km from a mountain range here in Melbourne called the "Dandenong ranges".. try and look it up on google.. there are miles and miles of single track and not a lot of "restricted" trails to boot...I'll try and post some pix of the area ...:)

Sounds like Gumstead Gap Trail. Surely you didn't skip the 4 mile fire road climb up. Don't mean to beat you up. That is a great area to ride. I like Laurel Mtn. (Same general area) great steep climbs. Nasty downhills. Pisgah is awesome.

My favorite trail is a new trail that i haven't been on before and I have just finished it. It should have have some route finding in it and buffalo droppings on the trail.

Hey MIJoe, there is some great riding in Eligay, GA and in the Gainesville, GA area. I've yet to go to Conyers, but I've heard the course there is pretty good. It's the one used for the '94 Olympics.

Last time I was in Tsali, NC I met a guy from Gainesville and he said there was riding all over Gainesville. I went there but only found a couple of different trails. I guess you gotta know where to go! I ended up going to a shop in town (don't remember the name) and they hooked me up with a bunch of trails.

What are the trails like in Athens?

I would have to say that my faavorite trial for riding on is the KalHaven Trail between Kalamazoo and Lake Michigan. It is a converted railway bed, made into a Bike trail.:D

my favorite trail is 'Brown's Camp' in Oregon about 40 miles west of Portland in the Tillamook State Forest.

it's not the most epic trail and doesn't have the very most knarely downhill, but it is a great trail with a basic 8 miles loop and then a 'lower' section which has about 1000ft of vertical --- the lower trail is right on the border to being unrideable, but ALL of it is doable... the technical challenges are everywhere and after riding it like 15+ times there are still so many challenges... it's a good trail when it's dry, when it's wet, when it's hot and when it's cold

it's also well-built and handles the weather and the riders well - almost no erosion and what little erosion is repaired by PUMP(Portland United Mountain Pedalers - IMBA) i think...

singletrack all the way with really steep setions that are ALL climbable IF i'm in shape and don't make a mistake... and so many sweet curves and drops and logs and it's just a beautiful trail and every time has been an incredible experience... evry time i leave, even if i'm dead tired i am already thinking about when i can ride it again!

unfortunately i currently live in Germany and haven't ridden my favorite trail in almost 2 years!!!! but ther are other good things about Germany i guess

You got me thinking "Road Trip" to Oregon! That trail sounds like a blast!:D
