Yes, I understand
that every life must end, uh huh
As we sit alone,
I know someday we must go, uh huh
Oh, I'm a lucky man
to count on both hands, the ones I love
Some folks just have one
Yeah, others they got none, uh huh
Stay with me,
Oh, Let's just breathe

Practiced all my sins,
never gonna let me win, uh huh
Under everything,
just another human being, uh huh
Yeah, I don't wanna hurt,
There's so much in this world to make me bleed (believe)
Stay with me,
You're all I see

Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Lord, if I didn't, I'm a fool, you see
No one knows this more than me
As I come clean I...

Wonder every day,
as I look upon your face, uh huh
Everything you gave,
and nothing you would take, uh huh
Nothing you would take.
Everything you gave.

Did I say that I need you?
Oh, did I say that I want you?
Lord, if I didn't, I'm a fool, you see
No one knows this more than me
As I come clean I...

Nothing you would take.
Everything you gave.
I hope until I die I...
Meet you on the other side.

In this particular vein, I like Emerson Lake & Palmer's "Lucky Man".

Most of the 'love songs' that hit for me are the painful ones:

"Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)", Journey
"Still Lovin' You", Scorpions

Stuff like that. But this PJ song is a good one.

personal fave is probably "love song" by elton john off tumbleweed connection but i won't argue with the
dusty springfield or herb albert offerings in post #5. this, of course, does not include al green's body of work?
'cause if it does, forget the song-how about the whole album(s)? side two of both atlantic crossing by rod the mod
stewart and veedon fleece by van the man morrison are both pretty good for setting the mood too. getz/gilberto
by stan getz & joao gilberto (the one with "girl from ipanema" & "corcovado") does not suck either.

That's my favorite Bacharach song. Not for nothing, but great song writing transcends musical genres, eras, generations. A great song in 1950 or 1970 is still great 40 or 50 years later, and a lame song still blows. Evidence of the latter is rampant on today's Billboard 100 of course.

Oh well. There's always some good song writing out there someplace. As demonstrated by Mr. Vedder's recent work.

A true love song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEV58ztuihs

I WALK THE LINE.
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time.
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

You've got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can't hide
For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

I've always loved this one. I learned to played it, in anticipation of playing it to my wife at our 25th anniversary in another year off...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nPAnvOcPBs
You to me
Are sweet as roses in the morning
And you to me
Are soft as summer rain at dawn, in love we share
That something rare

The sidewalks in the street
The concrete and the clay beneath my feet
Begins to crumble
But love will never die
Because we'll see the mountains tumble
Before we say goodbye

My love and I will be
In love eternally
That's the way
Mmm, that's the way it's meant to be

All around
I see the purple shades of evening
And on the ground
The shadows fall and once again you're in my arms
So tenderly

The sidewalks in the street
The concrete and the clay beneath my feet
Begins to crumble
But love will never die
Because we'll see the mountains tumble
Before we say goodbye

My love and I will be
In love eternally
That's the way
Mmm, that's the way it's meant to be

The sidewalks in the street
The concrete and the clay beneath my feet
Begins to crumble
But love will never die
Because we'll see the mountains tumble
Before we say goodbye

My love and I will be
In love eternally
That's the way
Mmm, that's the way it's meant to be

And that's the way
That's the way it's meant to be

That's the way
(that's the way it's meant to be)
Whoa, that's the way
That's the way it's meant to be [fade

Hooo boy, you're in for a world of hurt when you see the prices for those. (http://www.sound-smith.com/cartridges/boall.html) Might be better off just getting a new turntable. The DJ craze of the past 10 years or so has kept phonographs readily available.

And, like gitarzan sez, yard sales rule for old stereo equipment. I need to go on a hunt for a 78 player this summer.

All of these are great. But without a doubt, the one that speaks to me the most is Wayne Shorter's Infant Eyes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38OXtiRZ2ig) (the Jean Carn(e) version she did with Doug). One of the most hauntingly beautiful ballads ever written, IMO.
