What's the difference between a bike with road gears or mountain gears?

In general, road bikes are geared for high speed cruising down to gears for moderate climbing. Mountain gears are generally concentrated in low to mid speed/high torque range for off road technical terrain and climbing, and also to get those knobbies rolling. They are not geared quite as high as road bikes.
