I am new to mountain biking, was a bmxer but i have just gotten a hard tail STP 2 Giant my dad got it for my birthday. He also installed a 3 ring front sprocket should i ask to put on the 1 ring or keep the 3 ring?

I use a triple with one chainring mounted mid. The outer chainrings teeth are ground off to be used as a bashring, small ring gone.
I removed the derailler, shifter, most people keep the derailler and granny ring. Dh bikes etc rarely have 46 or large outer rings.

I'd keep the triple as the bike heavier, you'll need more gears and the triple gives you options.

On my triple gone single I mounted a 38 tooth Blackspire unramped ring, slightly heavier duty. Filled the granny ring mounts with bmx bolts to keep clean.

There is an old pic before I changed the ring on this thread, http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=44412&highlight=bash+ring

if you can do what jeff did, do it, but if not, get a raceface bashring to replace the 3rd ring, i did that a long time ago, and even though i thought i would miss the 3rd ring ive gotten so used to having only 2 that i cant even imagine how i ever had a 3rd, and the bashring has more than done its job over the years.

but it also depents on what you're going to use the bike for, if your doing trials and dirt jumping (what the stp was really designed for) go with 2 rings and a bashguard

Bash gard is the thing that keeps ur sprocket from breaking right?

Keeps your teeth safe, pant guard, chain guide.

Recommended,

A good go might be a 36-34 mid, 26-22 granny, outer mounted bashguard.
34 and 22 for hauling a heavy bike uphill. 36-24 if your o.k with weight and want to speed up. Nice thing is chainrings are easy to swap out.
If I went 'mountain climbing' I just swap my 38 for a 34.
They cost 'buck a tooth' or whatever.

Get a chain tensioner if you try a single ring setup.

if you do the kind of urban riding involving jumping up, or popping up your front wheel first than rear wheel, up any higher than 2 foot walls and stuff, a bash ring is a must, same goes for trails that involes going over large logs and rocks.
