Howdy all

It's time to change the drive on my Downtube. It has lasted three years of constant flogging (including off-tarmac up hill/down dale). I've never liked the long jockey wheel so I'm keen on the Sturmey Archer X-RF8; they might not be as efficient but are tidy. A few things I need to work out first if anyone here can help.

1 -The Downtube spec on the 8FH gives 28 spoke, whereas the SA8 has 36 holes. Will 28 stainless steel 13 gauge spokes be enough or do I need a new rim?

2 - The pics show no chain-tension-wheel on 8FH yet the drop-outs on my frame are vertical. How does this work?

If anyone has done this mod or owns the 8FH and can show me some pics of the rear wheel set-up or point out any other things to be aware of I would be grateful.

1. Lacing the 28 hole rim to the 36 hole hub is going to be problematic. It's not impossible, but involves some substantial geometry. See sheldon brown.
2. I'm almost certain the 8FH has horizontal dropouts. Personally I would never use a tensioner with an IGH, but there are many others who don't seem to mind.

If i remember correctly, that DT model has a sliding dropout with an attachment/doodag for a derailleur hanger.

For $389 the deal on a brand new one that has been upgraded since then may be the way to go. http://www.downtube.com/Font_Suspension_Internal_Hub_Folding_Bike.html

I just got a new 8H two weeks ago to replace my 3 year old NS whose frame cracked at the seatpost. So far so good except for the noticeable 2 lb increase in weight from the front fork, a less comfortable but lighter Velo 'plush' saddle, and me getting used to the fold.

On the positive note, a slightly nicer riding position, and a red color :-)

Thanks for the feedback

I would go for a the newer DT model except importing to UK is prohibitive and the old bike frame is still in good shape.

Seems a new rim would be the sensible move.

CHUCKY - Is there a mechanical reason why you'd avoid a tensioner?

IMO the tensioner is half the problem of using a derailleur. Tensioner+IGH = worst of both worlds
