I just demolished 3 layers of the most hideous 1970's linoleum. How could they possibly think these were nice patterns  I've still got the original 70's toilet, tub and sink in our bathroom ... and they're purple :notamused: What the heck?

So I pose the question, was there anything good that came out of the 70's?

When we were house-hunting one of the ones we looked at had a bathroom with Pepto-pink, Mint green, white and black tiles. If I remember the tub and toilet were a brownish-pink color. I wanted to gouge my eyes out.
Everything I can think of that was made in the late 60's and early 70's was complete junk, including the cars.

BTW, pink, purple, baby blue etc tiles and bathroom appliances were earlier than the 70's. The 70's colors were harvest gold, olive green and chocolate brown. Patterns were big and bold and US cars were crap. The glory days of AMF as well....

30 to 40 year old styles are the most despised. Just wait 10 more years, and it'll be collectible. In the 1980s, everyone was sick of ranch houses and 1950s design. Now they are hot.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Victorian houses were dirt cheap, because few people wanted them.

Of course, Sturgeons Law says that "90% of everything is crud" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeon%27s_Law#.E2.80.9CNinety_percent_of_everything_is_crud.E2.80.9D) which probably includes your vinyl floors.

The original hippies held a funeral for hippie-dom somewhere around 1969 give or take a year. Of course, what you call hippies
continued to spread.

I suggest reading up on the 70's

For me, it was awful. But a lot of good came out of it, as well. Apple computers, pollution controls, seat belts.
Let me think a while, maybe I can think of something that would be a good read.

I debated calling them hippies in the 70's, however trust me ... there were definitely hippies left in the 1st half.

Those pink, purple, blue bathroom sets with contrasting tiles? hi-end 1920's -30's. Grew up in an old (old in the 60's & 70's!) house in upstate NY - main floor bathroom was cranberry & grey, one 2nd floor bathroom was yellow & black, while the other was a study in black & white subway tile; 3rd floor was lavender & mint. Grandma's place - the "sister-house" across the drive, had lavender & slate for the ground floor, and - not one, but TWO blue and mint bathrooms! Maybe it was prohibition?

Depends on who you ask. The original hippies would say no. I had long hair and thought of myself as a hippie.
But i'm not sure the word is the right one. I'd be more likely to say I was part of the counter-culture.

Hippies had their pros and cons. Here is my list

PROs-Political integrity, Racial equality, non judgmental acceptance, non intrusive government, "high" hopes for communal society, Crosby Stills, Nash and Young.

CONs-Irresponsible morality, burned out brains, welfare bums, Crosby Stills Nash and Young.

I loved the seventies...well the first half anyway. Then came disco...the seventies were ruined from this point forward. I honest to God cannnot grasp how a lot of Europeans not only still like that sh**, but ever even liked it in the first place. It's the most shallow, rediculous waste of time I can think of. In fact if it wern't for disco, I'd say the seventies were a damned site better than the eighties. The "Let it be" kind of feeling was nice to live in and I still have a thing for women in denim and suede or leather. :p (I tried to convince Mrs. Cloud to wear more of it, but alas...:() No decade is perfect of course, and the smog back then (especially over L.A.) was downright scary. We also had to start locking our doors for the first time in our lives due to the Manson family...and we live in Ms. :twitchy: But hey...the Allman Brothers made it all worthwhile. :D

The politics were at best a waste of time. In retrospect, they played a big part in Nixon winning. I like CSN&Y.

Welfare? I think you are a bit confused there. That's a different bit of history, and I doubt you care much what
really happened.

Burned out is a bit silly. Some guys did, no doubt. But ambition and success is 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration, remember?
We just wanted to live. I have spent much of my life outside, hiking, camping, fishing. Didn't make much money, but I liked
what I was doing.

I was there and care deeply about the hippie movement.

True Hippes see DNC in Chicago as a rallying point. Protesting the injustices of the Political Machines. They were also why NIxon couldn't escape. They tried to break up the good ole boy systems. I doubt that Watergate would have happened if Hippies didn't keep it pushed forward. The Good ole boys would have swept it under the carpet as had always been done.

Communes went from really trying, farming, working sharing to being enclaves of welfare fraud and ripping off those who would work. As a worker, I see those times as the reason that Socialism will never work.

They really were founders of the Green movement, kinda. Respect for the wilderness, being able to live in non destructive ways, protecting it, positive.

Grass, acid and PCP, many of my friends from back then can't balance a check book. The search for an expanded consciousness burned the only brain they had to work with. David Cosby is the poster boy.

No gramps....but the F body style did remain pretty constant for the 70s and it was a pretty good body style. But lets remember the 70's also gave us the pacer, the gremlin, and the pinto. So, it kind of negates the camaro.
