Just wondering. Do I need to be concerned about heat damage to my bike keeping it in the garage? I live in Arizona and it often gets to 110+ in the summer, so the garage is probably even hotter then that.

I don't have alot of room inside for the bike but if heat damage is a concern I will make room.

What are your thoughts?

110+ plus is hot! but I don't think it would melt anything on a bike. I might let some of the air out of the tires to remove the stress on the tires. And I would take the cyclecomputer off. :)

More than half of my garage rafters have bikes hanging off of them. Heat is never a factor as it rarely gets over 100 inside.

In the garage. I don't think a few hours in hundred plus temps is going to hurt the bike. Seems like moisture and UV are much more threatening to your bike than heat.

g'day,

thaty sort of heat isn't going to damage the bike, (well not while its in the garage anyway!). My bikes live in the house on a tiered rack in my study. It doesn't take up that much room. 'She who must be obeyed' isn't that happy about it, but hey, I can always get another wife...LOL,

cheers,

I used to keep mine in the garage for years. Now that I have taken it down off the wall, and have begun restoration, I have fallen in love with my old Centurion.

My wife keeps complaining as well, and I can't figure out why. It only takes up a small part of our bed.

:)

don't know if the heat would hurt the bike, but I know about that heat first hand.
(should let a little air out of the tires between rides anyhow, yeah?)
I keep mine inside

At the last house I had a bike stolen from the shed, so I didn't like keeping it in there anyway (and I had no garage). But for the 2 years I had my Kona at that house I think I road 300KM's total. New house I've got both bikes in garage and I've ridden over 300KM this week.

So its really a necessity to keep it in garage...too much effort to lug up and down all those stairs <-- youth these days, aren't we lazy :(

Is that freestanding or bolted down? How sturdy is it if its free standing?

I had my bike stolen from me about 6 years ago in the garage (a crappy KHS), but a week after, my buddy across the street had his stolen (kona firemountain). The thiefs used a sledge hammer to open his door. Now it's always in my house.

All of our bikes are in the garage. I wouldn't be worried about heat affecting the bikes.

Are you asking me (re the pictures)?
it is bolted to the shelves.. It Will not work free standing...
If you have more then one bike (now we have 4) you can basically bolt the stands to a horizontal sheet of plywood...

I'm currently shopping for a condo, and it's quickly become apparent that I'll need a two bedroom, one for me, and one for my bikes. No way I'm leaving 'em in a common lock-up in the basement.

I've kept mine in the garage for the last 20 plus years, in heat above 100 degrees and in freezing temps. Actually keeping the bike in a garage is the best thing for a bike because then the bike is close to outside temperture when you take it outside, thus condensation will not form inside the frame.

My road bike spends its time in the garage unless I don't expect to ride it for a while. Then it will get hung up in my home-office which is upstairs in my house. It's sort of a pain to unnecessarily lug it up and down the stairs.

Both of mine hang from the ceiling in the garage, hooks from Lowes, screwed into the 2x12 ceiling joists. I then lock both my Paramount and Serotta thtough the wheels and frame with an eyebolt into the wall stud. Plus my garage is on the house alarm system with a 2 zone sensor. :) Been that way for 11 years now.

I don't have a garage, but if I did they'd still hang here.

If its good enough for a car, your bike can handle it.

I keep my bikes in the house. I keep telling myself that eventually I'll get around to converting my garage into a workshop, however between work, kids, weekend rides :D I never seem to get around to it. I'm just running out of room in the house for all my tools and stuff.

Is it bad to hang a bike from the rim? I always thought about getting those red, plastic coated hooks from LHS (local hardware store), but I thought it might not be a good idea due to the pressure on the rim. I always thought a support brace that kept the weight on the top tube (like RonH or Khuon) would be better. I know that most of the responses will indicate that the bikes weight is less than your weight, why wouldn't the rims be able to support the bike weight alone vs. bike plus rider.

Any thoughts?

Our bikes stay in the basement. I don't trust our auto garage door openers, even though I haven't had any problems for 5 years. Before that, the door went up one night somehow and we lost an old BMX bike without a chain or brakes, a TV that didn't work, and an old handtruck that was rusting out. We quickly closed and locked the door before the thief brought the stuff back.

Keep it in the garage hanging by the rim....other bikes on a homemade frame rack system on the other side of the garage, next to the seldom used lawnmower and handtools.

I like that set-up, may try that in my garage. I have alot of spare 2x4s and such lying around and have been trying to think of a way to make something that I can use to work on the bike.

Some day I will buy a work stand but until then...

If you decide to do this, you need to remember that the height of the hook is different from bike to bike. I have 3 bikes and one of them is Shorter.. I hang the bikes to save space, and put the in horizontal before and after a ride (water bottles, pumping air, etc.)

No

I've hung mine like that for years. In fact I made a custom mount for them to hang them like that in our last apartment. I measured it so that the rear wheels sat on the ground mainly due to ceiling height. The only concern is that you get the ones with the heavy duty coating to protect the rim from scratches.

You have to work with the space you have.

It is (obviously), and they can handle the weight of the bike alone.

Why would you keep it anywhere else? Come on in but dont sit on the bike.

Sorebutt,
Is that ever a clever home made rack system! I really like how you can use it vertically or horizontally.
We generally keep our bikes hanging from hooks in the basement. Of course, my new LeMond spends its days in my husband's home office (it gets lonely back by the furnace, I think). That said, we do have our tandem and my mountain bike hanging in the garage. I use the mountain bike to ride down to the park with the kids, so it's handy in the garage. The tandem sits out there just cuz there's more room.
The major downside, as I see it, to keeping bikes in the garage is the security factor. One kind of hates to advertise to anyone walking/driving by that you have several thousand dollars of bikes hanging in plain view. It seems that you are inviting trouble when you display them like that. On the other hand, many people just don't have room indoors. Then, I suppose, locking the bikes to something sturdy and keeping your overhead door closed as much as possible and locking all other doors would be the next best thing.

Or if you live somewhere that people dont do that crap and you can leave your garage door unlocked or your window down in your car and it stays that way. I'm lucky that way as i've leave my garage door open all the time when i'm home until 8 or 9 at night and then close and lock. Not even a house broken into on my block as long as i've lived here. I can understand feeling uneasy about it but i've never given it a second thought. Hell on sat morning i open it at 5am and go back inside until 6 or so when i go ride.

Bike in the house car in the garage. Even though the car is new, I care more about the bike, and I don't have enough room in the house for the car. Plus the bike will not make the house smell like gasoline!
