Winter Cycling - How thin is the Gore Bikewear Helmet hat?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I have been experimenting with different winter head coverings, and, although I found a couple of solutions, I am looking for one for appx. 10-20 F weather with some windchill.

For anything over 20F I found that I could cut a windproof piece out of an old Louis Garneux (sp?) shoe cover (believe it or not) and with velcro attach it to the inside of a helmet. I actually got two made for both helmets I use (bright yellow and white/lime -- they match my most frequent outfits) from both shoe covers.

I also have a really thin Icebreaker 100% washable Merino Wool hat but I find it a bit loose and I want to shorten it a bit. I got it in size L thinking that it would shrink. It shrunk some but not a whole lot.

Last winter I wore a real thin and snug UnderArmour hat that was all polyester, and it was OK, but I lost it.

Now I am thinking of getting the Gore Bikewear hat, but not sure a) what size to get

and b) how thin or thick is it? I don't think I need anything too thick. Anyone who has this? http://www.rei.com/product/757108

I have to add that thicker hats don't stretch well and tend to be too snug, but thinner hats I often have to pull up because they fall over my eyes. This is an item that really is best bought in an actual store where you can try it on.. I realize that... Also, when I get a fresh haircut I find that snuggier hats are a lot looser -- imagine that! :D

Perhaps I should buy a hat right before I get a new haircut so that I can allow for some looseness when I get one.

when I'm not using my 3 hole ski mask / balaclava I'm using a short wool hat that just works fine under my helmet. but out of all the wool hats we have in the house only this one fits well. it's just long enough to cover my ears.

I also use a cheap motel style shower cap over the helmet to help regulate my head temperature

I have an Arc'Teryx Bucket Liner that I use when boarding. Can't say I've used it on the bike with a helmet yet, but it is quite a nice hat, and is somewhat vented, though warm, on the top of the head. Has a great fit too.

during summer months I use Head Sweats, well not actually by that brand, some are just cotton do-rags. I'm looking forward to using them again. I've considered using them under my hats but haven't yet.

just picked up a helmet liner at REI by PACE Sportswear, Inc. made with "Coolmax" (active) material. They make skull caps and traditional cycling caps too.

I considered cycling specific helmet covers but I didn't like the yellow ones and the black ones didn't make sense. I like my clear shower cap cuz it's clear, the helmet looks normal and the reflective bits are not covered over. I would love a cycling specific helmet cover if anyone made a clear one!

BTW: PACE also makes stuff for the winter!
