Well, it turns out I did accomplish one of my goals for 2009: I got my wife pregnant!!! We found out a few days before Christmas and told our immediate family then, but waited until now to let the news out to extended family and friends.

So, my rides will become shorter and more seldom... until I get him/her into cycling and eventually leaving me in the dust!

Shorter and less seldom most likely but a the same time much more meaningful to you, and in 18 years or so you’ll have grandkids also! I have 5 and they sure are fun trying to get them into riding bikes more. The great thing about them is I get to play with them then send them home :D

Hopefully something that makes money and is in demand... oboe, horn, viola... not trumpet like dad.

Congrats! Now it's time to start checking out the Family Biking & Rec forum.

Look into getting a "Bobike Mini" carrier. We started using one when our baby was 9 months old. She's 19 months old now and loves going for rides.

You can still do a lot of cycling.
http://www.premier-outdoor.net/pictures/bike%20trailer/bike%20baby%20trailer%20PM101.jpg
First the baby trailer.
http://www.duckvillageoutfitters.net/Bike_Baby_Seat.jpg
Then as soon as the child can sit up, you get the baby bike seat.
http://islandbikeshops.com/merchant/1067/images/site/Trail-A-Bike.jpg
Then the trail-a-bike for the youngster.
http://www.co-motion.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/holly-and-lauren.jpg
Then the tandem, until your child can build up enough strength to kick your butt on his, or her, own.

As a parent of a teenager, I have one advice for you.

Get a good still camera and a nice video camera, and make sure you start documenting everything from right now. Your wife's pregnancy, how she feels, video letters to the unborn tyke, when the baby kicks, the delivery, family trips, silly moments etc. You get my drift!

Eventually, you are gonna find that you can't pay your kid to hang out with you, as he/she will rather hang out with friends!

AND EVERYTHING GOES FAST!

As a parent of a high school senior, don't ask me how I know:D

Thanks Lucas! I hadn't thought about a video letter. She has already forbidden cameras at the delivery. I will be singing and reading to the baby in the womb starting on Wed... when it supposedly starts to develop its ears.

I want the baby to recognize my voice as early as possible. Prenatal studies show that when fathers talk to or sing to the baby during pregnancy, the baby is more likely to find comfort in their arms after birth.

And as someone who has sung at the Hollywood Bowl before, I think I can hold my own ;)

I can definitely attest that it is possible that babies in the womb can and do recognize the voices arround them. I talked to my son all the time he was in the womb, and when he was delivered, I can almost swear that he was trying frantically to match faces with voices as soon as he came out.

It could also be my imagination running amok though.

Crowd participation in Sing-A-Long Sound Of Music does not count as having sung at the Hollywood Bowl! :)

Congrats on the new addition. It can't hurt to sing and talk to the baby while in the womb and if it is something that helps you become an actively engaged father, then it's all good.

Wow, great news!

Please be sure and video the singing part. You and your child will get so much more from that once the kid moves beyond the protoplasm stage.

I think that's somewhere around age 19 or so, these days. ;)

"The farmer in the dell, the farmer in the dell, hi o the dairy o, the farmer in the dell."

"Three blind mice, three blind mice, see how they run, see how they run..."

As a music teacher, I'm trying to tech myself to accompany myself on piano to "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly". Too bad I suck at playing an instrument and singing at the same time.

As a former working musician who struggled with that problem early on, I assure you it can be overcome. Just takes practice. Also, a 2 year old won't offended if you have to break rhythm or don't play all the way through a lyric or chorus. Just play and sing it Daddy.

I'm guessing Standard of Excellence? I prefer to use Essential Elements 2000 with my students, but SoE is alright too. But I just do private lessons. Plan on teaching high school band. My hat's off to you, sir, for being able to put up with the middle schoolers.

Oh yeah, and congrats on the whole baby thing!

Yep, Standard of Excellence, mainly because that's what was here when I got here. I have Essential Elements for my strings classes because I got to choose the books when we started that program.

Middle school is a zoo, especially in this school where they just don't try. I originally wanted to teach high school, but raising a family is better when you don't have tons of after school pep band and Spring musical rehearsals, Friday night football games, Saturday parades, etc. etc. etc.

If you need any help or advice, don't hesitate to ask me. The learning curve is quite fast for new teachers, but it doesn't hurt to get a few tricks before they're past due.

Beth did her first century on the tandem at 8 (it was a Cool Breeze) and continues to ride in her ripe old age (she is 10 now). We got our youngest on the tandem at 5 and she did her first 50 miles at 6. It seems like a lifetime ahead, but it arrives sooner than you think

Actually, it seemed to just take some relxation on her part. She had just come off the pain meds after oral surgery and had taken some time off work when it worked.

That's the kind of thing I'm hoping for. TJKnight also has a 4 year old who's cute as a button and all she wants to do is go on a bike ride with daddy.
