There have been several post about biking sharing on the Car-free forums but almost all of them have dealt with North America and Europe. I have been trying to find more information about the bike sharing programs in my current country of residence, Korea, but its dificult to find in English.

My neighboring city is Changwon and I see people riding hte bike share bikes there are the time. They are simple three or five speed cruisers with step through frames, front baskets, and rear racks. They have an electronic do-hicky on the handle bars that does, I have no idea what.

Here is a link I found about the bike sharing programs in Seoul, the nations capital. Does anyone else have info about bike sharing in some other place in Asia?

A lot of people have come to realize that one of the biggest problems with making a good bike sharing program is theft. However, Korea and Japan have much lower rates of theft, as a general societal problem, than almost any country in the western world. Maybe bike sharing programs are doomed in the West because of culture?

By the way, bike sharing is free of charge in Korea. You just need to go to the city office and get a card which cost 5,000 Won (about $4.00).

In the case of Changwon, they seem to have started bike sharing in 2005. You can get more information on the bike sharing program at this page (http://bike.changwon.go.kr/sub08/sub8_1.jsp). Of course, it's only in Korean... But there are some pictures.

According to their info, anyone over 15 can join the program. They have 430 bikes spread across 20 locations. If you don't have a membership, you can still rent the bike for one day. The system is operated 24/7/365.

One year membership costs 20,000 Won (~18 USD), single day use for non-members is 1,000 Won (90 cents).

The fee covers the first 2 hours of a rental use. You pay 45-90 cents for each 30 minutes after that. You have to return the bike within 3 hours.

It seems like a nice program, but I don't know how well it would work in a larger city (Changwon has a population of about 600,000). The prices is very cheap, and if your 3 hours expire, you can always just re-rent the bike.

I remember when they started a similar program in Finland some 10 years ago. I believe they lost about 70% of the bikes (stolen or thrown in to the sea) during the first year. Second year loss was a lot lower already, and they said this is very typical for bike sharing programs. There's a lot less vandalism in Korea, though.
