General Cycling Discussion - Mounting second water bottle cage

On my poseur roadie (an mtb) there isn't a bracket for a second water bottle cage in the upgright position. I'd like to add one however it seems that the only choice would be to drill two holes in the frame and mount it like that.

Would this be adviseable? Damaging the frame perhaps?

Zip ties are your friend ;-)

Seriously, I plan on figuring out a way to do it with zip ties. For my longer day trips I want 3 bottles, so I will need to do something to add to the 2 I already have.

Nice edit rykoala :) I'll have to pickup some zip ties, the other problem is that i'm not sure the second cage will fight inside the triangle..!

Aggggghhhhhh....whatever you do, don't start drilling holes in your frame!.....there are plenty of 'after market' bottle cages with a 'zip' tie type arrangement to attach it to your seat tube or down tube. You can also get the 'triathlete' type that have a bracket that attaches to the seat post.......Did i mention, don't drill any holes in your frame?......Oh its an MTB?....on 2nd thoughts, drive over it in your car & get a 'roadie'!...lol

If you need more than two water bottles, you need a hydrator.

NO holes or you will screw your frame up. Minoura makes several different water bottle mounts that will look a lot neater then cheap asse zip ties; and they are not expensive. Check with your LBS about Minoura. There is also another by Two Fish that uses nylon cloth straps to tighten around the frame...not as good as the Minoura but can be mounted to any type of frame or stem.

Carrying 2 water bottles is not a problem, but needing more water then those will provide then you will need a hydrater like the CamelBack. Personally I don't like stuff on my bike but I had to give in to a CamelBack because I lived in the desert and 3 24 ounce Polar water bottles (2 on frame mounts and 1 on the stem) only took me about 2 hours to consume, so in order to ride further I needed more water. So I got a CamelBack Rogue, which at the time was their smallest (70 ounces) and lightest hydrater they carried.

well theres alway hose clamps the screw kind but I would wrap the frame with tape or something first

Darn ok, there isn't actually enough room inside the triangle to fit a second bottle cage. What I did was zip-tie it to the top tube for now :/
