I'm a cyclist who's looking at moving to Chicago, Ill in the near future (a great city, but unfortunately not a mecca for competetive cycling) and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of any good indoor tracks or ways other than the trainer/stationary/etc. routes for surviving the winter. Veilen dank.

i'm in chicago, and i don't train very much outside in the winter, but i do commute every day which seems to keep me happy (and pretty cold). if you have the gear, it isn't bad. don't know of any indoor tracks, but it is worth looking into if you can't handle sitting on a trainer all winter.

Not a mecca? You gotta be kidding!

The velodrome is being resurfaced/saved. They do track racing on Thursdays in the summer. And beyond that, we've got the Downers Grove National Criterium Championships held here every year. Members of US Postal come every year, and this year, I'll be rooting for Robbie Ventura to get the win- he's got a support team to ensure that. Add that to the Mrs. T's triathlon, which is one of the largest in the USA, plus a number of other major and minor races and tours held around the state, and you've got plenty.

Come on down this weekend and head out to Downers Grove for the criterium. You can walk up and register (if there's still room). It's a cool race- VegasCyclist from the forums will be racing this year!

I don't know of indoor tracks. I do believe there are some isolated places around the state, but I cannot remember where off the top of my head. You may want to go to http://www.chibikefed.org/ and see if you can contact them to give suggestions on where you can go.

Otherwise, join a fitness club and when you can stand it, take some of the spinning classes there when the trainers and rollers are too much to handle.

Where are you coming from? When will you get here? Welcome to Chicago!
