This looks like an excellent candidate for my first century ride! So a tentative yes for me.

This will be my first century ride also....I live in Houston, but we are going to head to Austin and ride that rout. I have two buddies that did last year and they loved it...

Is the Austin Shiner route a better ride?

I've never been on the ride so I can't speak from experience. We live in Houston so we just want to take off from some place different...Plus Austin has 6th street lol

+1 for bringing back the Houston leg, though not sure which one I'll do.

Last year's GASP was my first century and had an absolute blast. It was overcast and minimal wind for most of the ride. However, at the +/- 70 mile mark, pretty brutal headwind (though I've experienced MUCH worse) for the remainder of the ride. Fun post-party: Fat sausage dogs, good music, and "only" 5 medium sized beers. Good times.

I did Austin-Shiner a few years ago. 88 miles of headwinds and chipseal. The roads weren't bad otherwise, very low traffic, great rest stops, lots of friendly people, good support. And of course, the after party.

It was worth it, just to check GASP off of the bucket list.

This is the same weekend as the D/FW Bike MS event.

You would think that even organizers would not want to schedule big events on the same weekend.

I plan on doing the Houston to Shiner Ride. Tried one year but was too wet for me so I will be a newbie on this one.

Does anyone know if Partner Passes can be purchased at the finish line party? There's a place to order them in the rider registration form, but I haven't seen any other information. I've got people coming out, but I don't know how many can make it yet. I've emailed the folks organizing the ride, so hopefully they'll respond in a timely manner, but I thought I'd ask here too.

The organizer is a very sweet woman but sometimes it take a while for her to respond. Could take up to a week or two, so don't fret.

As for friends, I'm 99.9% sure the passes are only for food/drink.

Edited for clarity: In other words, the event is free but you need a pass for the food and drinks. However, think each pass gets you a sausage (maybe 2) and 5 beers. So you could, in theory, share with unplanned friends showing up...

Haven't mapped this guy out on BikeRouteToaster yet...anyone have a feel for the elevation from Austin to Shiner? Would you consider this a hilly ride? Just trying to figure out how ready I need to be...

Thanks.

generally speaking what pace (mph) should I be able to keep up for this to be feasible

According to a coworker who did the Austin leg last year, the beginning was fairly flat, but the final 20-25 miles became hilly. He said that he was fighting a strong headwind as well that contributed to his being picked up by the SAG Wagon.

Mind you, this is a person that jumped into the ride at the last minute. In fact, he purchased his bike the Wednesday before the ride and he got to the 80 mile mark before calling it. I'm shocked that he'd make it that far without training, but- to each his own.

Think that's pretty accurate; headwind came in around mile +/- 70 and it was hilly (but not extremely steep) for the last 10 or so miles.

If you can average 15+ mph and limit the rest stops to 5 or so minutes, you should easily finish with plenty of time to spare.

Me and some friends are signed up for the Austin to Shiner. Now I have a month to train to go from 40 miles in 3.5 hrs to 100 miles in 6hrs (or is it 8, site isn't really clear when pick up is, but tours stop at 4)? I should be able to do it if there half the head wind and my tubes decide not to keep poping then I should be okay

This looks like a great ride, grandkids can stand on the side of the road in Halletsville to cheer me on the last 20 miles !!

I am considering the Houston to Shiner route. I am waiting for my friends to really commit before I register. They have flaked out when there have been less than ideal conditions - wind or a little cold weather.

I'm registered and I think we ride similar paces. If you'd like to ride together I'm game. I'll be riding the Faith again since it's now better adjusted for a little less aggressive position. The guys at Westeheimer bike barn were super cool and did a lot of adjustments on it. It's tip-top now!

Just drop me a line at purplefenderman at gmail dot com, name's Patrick. I'll be riding, rain or shine.

I went to pickup packet today. I was in line for 45 minutes. Since there is only one Houston pickup before the event, everyone was there to pick packets.

I hope the rain stays away or only light showers. I will ride sun or shine. See you out there tomorrow. I will be wearing my UH cougars jersey.

Yeah, I went to Sun & Ski Sports today too, pretty crappy organization, but got my packet and ready to ride my Roubaix manana

I figured the pickup would be bad, so I will grab mine the morning of.

I'll be on the Soul Faith bike wearing my HHH 2009 Jersey and random descente bibs. Don't want to get my capos rain-dirty again for like the 5th time. I'll be using my race blade fender in the back this time...

That was the hardest of 5 centuries I've done. Apparently the route from Austin was super easy because they had a tailwind. It was a lot of fun riding with AGGarcia and some other people we met along the way. One woman was a little powerhouse. 5'2'' of 20mph pacing the entire way. Averaged 18mph. Wish I did better, but my right achilles was killing me after mile 70. All kinds of beer and food were at the finish, which was so awesome. I love Shiner beer, and all the swag we got was so cool! I bought a jersey in the gift shop but wanted to buy everything in there because my love of Shiner knows no end :) I figured I earned that jersey. 101.36 Miles. So hard, but so worth it!

I'm glad to know that was hard for a centurie. This was my first and the last 15mi or so was very tough with the rolling hills, headwind and rough road.

The last 15 were horrible up to the point where we joined with the Austin riders. But the loop north of shiner was brutal for the hills and winds and chip/seal.

The organization of the trucks/luggage/busses was top notch. I have to say the ride organization was really good, but they could have used the same tech that the MS society does to assign random numbers to people instead of pre-assigning and then digging through a stack of numbers for each rider. Other than that, they did an awesome job.

Yes I rode with PF the Shiner 100. I was riding pretty strong until just before the lunch stop. The Shiner 100 was the hardest ride I have ridden. It was much harder than the MS150. The hills were not bad, but I had strong left knee pain from lunch on. I avg'ed 17.6 mph on the ride. At times I wondered if I was going to make it to the end.

Yes Laura was awsome. She could ride 19-21 mph just cruising along.

The food and drink were the best after ride party. The organization was very good in most aspects. The rest stops were in interesting locations and it would have been helpful to have a better idea where they were. I was not impressed with the SAG support and traffic control on major intersections. You could tell this ride does not have the support of a MS type ride, but it also has a lot fewer riders.

Just for reference, many of the roads were rough. These roads beat you up. The temps in the mid 80's did not help either. Now to rest up my sore left knee.

The ride from Austin was great. Nice and cool up until the 70 mile mark. I traded my way into 9 beers at the end... Feeling good.
