Bicycle Mechanics - Don't overlook the obvious - Lesson 487

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

A few days ago my computer started acting up, registering on, say, 6+ miles of a 9 mile ride. Then it stopped registering speed and miles altogether. Then the cadence went. Stopped by the shop Thursday. The wrench tested the head on their display rack which has mounts and a little wheel to spin. Head registered fine. They also had a little handheld unit to test the mount. Mount did not register speed/miles but did register cadence, which turned out to be a loose connection unrelated to anything else, just coincidence. So I bought a new mount. Before I hooked it up completely I snapped the pickup on the fork mount, and spun the wheel. Still no speed or miles. I kept looking and looking. Finally I looked very closely at the wheel magnet, which I had already made sure was in the proper position, etc. The more I looked at it, the more something didn't look quite right. Finally I realized that though most of it was still there, the actual little piece of magnet was gone. Stuck on a magnet from another wheel and, voila, speed and miles.

So there ya go. Another "don't overlook the obvious" lesson.
Regards,
Raymond

:)

The last time mine wouldn't work was where I'd put the front wheel on back to front after swapping the skewers...

Been there, done that too. Sure makes you feel foolish doesn't it.
