I've got a Specialized Roubaix with the full carbon fiber frame. I've recently become interested in doing some touring as well. Would it be possible to tour with a trailer such as the Quik-Pak bicycle trailer with this bike? I like it a lot I just dont know about how a carbon frame would hold up. This is really why Im looking to a trailer as opposed to panniers. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm very interested in the bike you have. How do you like it? How long have you had it? Why did you choose that bike? Anything you don't like about it?

I really like it a lot. Very smooth. Much less harsh than the aluminum bikes I test rode. No complaints so far.

I don't have the answer to your question, but there's one thing that keeps popping into my mind when I think of carbon fibre and the various biases against it: IF carbon bike frames and forks and seatposts etc. failed frequently, and people were getting hurt, there would be stories in the papers about the lawsuits.

And manufacturers would be requiring people to sign waivers and there'd be both detailed warnings and plenty of stats put out by insurance companies (let alone ambulance chasing lawyers). Yet we hear very very little about severe or serious failures, even though there are thousands upon thousands of carbon bike products on the road across N. America.

The hitch on the Quik-Pak doesn't look like it would put any stress to the stays of the bicycle. I know I wouldn't think twice about putting B.O.B. trailer on a carbon bike. You would probably be fine with the Quik-Pak and a Roubaix. If you are truly concened about it, why don't you contact Specialized (and maybe Quik-Pak) for their advice?

Touring is the way to go. But I do not know if a carbon frame is a good idea. The ones that I have seen have flex on a lateral force. I would definitely not suggest panniers or a BOB for this reason. The loaded force on the rear triangle might be detrimental due to the lateral force flex. If you just have to tour on this bike, buy a Burley Trailer or something that does not lay all of its weight on the back triangle on your bike.
