Tragic.

AP just reported that the death toll may reach a half of a million.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- Haitians piled bodies along the devastated streets of their capital Wednesday after a powerful earthquake flattened the president's palace, the cathedral, hospitals, schools, the main prison and whole neighborhoods. Officials feared hundreds of thousands may have perished but there was no firm count.

Death was everywhere in Port-au-Prince. Bodies of tiny children were piled next to schools. Corpses of women lay on the street with stunned expressions frozen on their faces as flies began to gather. Bodies of men were covered with plastic tarps or cotton sheets.

President Rene Preval said he believes thousands were killed in Tuesday afternoon's magnitude-7.0 quake, and the scope of the destruction prompted other officials to give even higher estimates. Leading Sen. Youri Latortue told The Associated Press that 500,000 could be dead, although he acknowledged that nobody really knows.

"Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed," Preval told the Miami Herald. "There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them."

Even the main prison in the capital fell down, "and there are reports of escaped inmates," U.N. humanitarian spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs said in Geneva.

The head of the U.N. peacekeeping mission was missing and the Roman Catholic archbishop of Port-au-Prince was dead.

Haiti's tragedy will ultimately reveal what stuff human kind is made of. The island is devastated and this on the heels of a terrible storm season a couple of years ago that they still haven't recovered from.

They need some serious help.

It's horrible to imagine the pain and suffering, I'm not sure I want to see the video. America can show true compassion now to help out.

I was in the middle of Hurricane Katrina. I have yet to even read a proper news report of this tragedy, or witness a single image, so it has not hit me yet.

After the emotions I had in Florida concerning Katrina, I am in no hurry to empathize with Haiti...

...too much pain...

I haven't heard a word about The Dominican Republic.

Don't take for granted CNN knows its head from its ass. Do your homework.

I like Brothers Brother Foundation and Oxfam America, personally. Some of the others they have listed, meh.

Reports say there is little or no rebar in the concrete in many of the city's multi story buildings. Ouch. That's a massive pancake waiting to happen. I mean, forget about earthquake-resistant building codes, concrete structures without rebar are on Page One of the Massive Fail Manual.

What a mess that country is. And that was before this latest disaster.

I haven't heard a word about The Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic seems to have dodged this earthquake which was centered off the Haitian coast and appears to be ready and willing to serve as a staging ground for relief efforts.

They were also the first country to provide aid.

We refer to that as URM for unreinforced masonry. There's still a lot of buildings in California that are URM.

How about you have some tact for once and start your own thread in P&R instead of dragging this one down?

Unfortunately, this looks to be the case.

That's a lot of houses basically flowing down the hill...

I went ahead and cleaned it up even more. Thanks for the replies to my PMs. =0)

To stay on topic I'll say the following with all my heart: Haiti, what a huge tragedy, I truly hope they get the help they need soon.

My guess is those are all very old structures and that anything built since 1950 or 1960 has rebar. Is that about right?

This isn't about politics. This is about humanity. If you actually have any I mean.

Yes. One of the best bike shops inthe area is in a URM building.
