*spoiler alert*

I just finished Henry James' The Portrait of a Lady (1881). A long read but a good one!

There are, however, a few things about which James has taken his reader's knowledge for granted. One seems to me crucial to understanding the long-term situation of "our heroine". Isabel is married to a man who, she discovers, married her for her money (he has and earns none) and now despises her. At the end of the novel, she may be going back to live with him, or she may be preparing to confront and ultimately leave him.

My question is, what are her options and obligations with regard to her fortune? Is he in control of it? Does he have any title to it? Were she to divorce him, what happens to the money?

Their domicile is Rome, but in the world of society, the law seems far less influential than custom. So what was the Victorian custom in this regard?
