I had been thinking about riding this road as a means to get from Hollister to Monterey (by way of Hwy 68). Had a chance to drive it from Salinas to San Juan Bautista. At the San Benito County line the road turns from a recently pave, albeit narrow black top to an ancient, badly patch concrete surface and continues this way virtually all the way down to SJB. This is a huge disappointment. Even though our tandem rides like a Cadillac there is no way I'm taking that much abuse on a bicycle. Has anyone out there ridden this? What did you think?
This is identical to what happens on the Old Coalinga Road right at the county line. On the East side coming up from Coalinga the road is in good shape. At the country line the road is really in bad shape and in a few places isn't even two cars wide - still going to ride it in the spring, however.
