Hi all,

I was wondering how an 'outwear' jacket or jersey can be worn in cold conditions. I know its obvious by the name "out" it should be worn outside. However if it gets cooler, can this be worn alone with a baselayer underneath?

Also is it unusual to wear only the outwear by itself? If this is not possible, regular jerseys is answer?

Please excuse my insufficient knowledge of winter clothing for cycling. Thanks for any who can suggest.

Roughly speaking though I am sure there are more detailed guides elsewhere on this forum:

60 and above - jersey alone
40-60 - jersey with base layer under it (short or long sleeve, depending)
40 and below - jacket on top

Is that what you're looking for? As far as a base layer with a jacket over that...sure, why not.

Ah, ok.. 'outwear' might mean something different.. hah

For beginners here is a guide (http://www.civiacycles.com/civiaweather.php)

But it's only a guide.

Spend the $$ and get yourself a good windproof, waterproof jacket that will hold up in any kind of weather. Once you get a good "outer shell" you can adjust the clothing underneath to accomodate the weather. I use a Showers Pass Century that I've had for 3 yrs. and it keeps me warm year-round. I've worn it in 70 degree weather and I've been comfortable all the way down to -14.
