Bicycle Mechanics - weird clicking from pedal / crank area

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. hi there

recently i've been experiencing some clicking noises from around the crank / pedal area of my scott boudler which seem to sort of coincide with each rotation, and don't necessarily occur when more pressure is applied, it occurs just during normal cycling.

i have cleaned around that area and re-oiled everything, but it makes no/little difference

i wondered if anyone migth have a better idea than me of what the problem could be?

cheers

this probably isn't it, but i had the same thing happen to me last year. i tried everything. it turned out to be a hairline crack of the ....water bottle cage!! the flex in the frame caused it to click with each pedal stroke. this just illustrates that when you think you know where it is coming from, it isn't. other solutions? cleat wear, your own knees (haha) ...

Same with me--I found out that the clicking was actually coming from my saddle as my weight shifted with each rotation. Seems the fabric is coming loose...

interesting.....well i checked the bottle holder on teh off chance that it was that, but it wasn't, lol. i dont think its the saddle/seatpost as it clicks hen i'm standing up also. but i get ur points that its not necessarily coming from where i think it is.....

i'll have another look 2moro

in the mean time if anyone has any more ideas that'll be great

cheers

Check the cable on your front deraillur, mine was clicking also and what had happend was the cable had gotten bent a little so it was clipping the right crank arm. check that and see if it's the problem

Make the chainring bolts as tight as you can get them, they can cause clicking. Check bottom bracket to make sure it's tight.... use loctite/grease. General wear of a crankset may cause it to click.

Could be your cleats and pedals. My Look cleats sometimes squeak.

......thats the bottom bracket starting to wear out.. you think its the pedals.. but its not......

I had a similar problem...pedals clicking once every rotation. The noise would come and go and it wasn't dependent on how much pressure I applied to the downstroke.

You might want to try this before doing something more drastic. All I did was lube and tighten up the pedal bearings until there was absolutely no free play--but not to the point of binding.

If you don't need pressure to duplicate the noise then you should be able to hear it off the bike. Put it in a stand if you have one or somehow get it off the ground and pedal it.

You should be able to hear something if it is not pressure related.

Could be water in the bottom bracket also. If it's been rainy, how about hang'n that bike up to dry or tipping it upside down.

hi

the other day i oiled the bearings in my pedals, which seemed to improve the clicking a bit, but when i rotated the pedals by hand it didn't feel that smooth, probably some wearing due to use etc, so a bought some new pedals. i also took apart the crank and bottom bracket (tho i could only undo one side of it, the other wouldn't budge, meaning i couldn't actually remove it properly) and regreased it.

took my bike out today to test it quickly before it started pissing down with rain, and the problem appears to be solved :-)

thanks again for all ur posts

cheers

"Oiled"? As in "with oil"? Fix that NOW. Bearings use grease, not oil. Oil will flush out the grease your pedal bearings need. That's probably why they don't feel that smooth. Re-pack them with grease, pronto.
