...no.
Lame. Although, if someone did only TT's, and became a cat 3, and then wanted to do a cat 3 crit, that would be dangerous.

Way to speak in contradictory absolutes.

incorrect.
if part of a SR and the upgrade is from 3->2 or 2->1, then yes as placement in the TT stage typically has a great influence on the SR GC and SR GC placings can award gobs of upgrade points
if you're asking this question though, I'd bet you're a ways from worrying about such details, so the answer to your question is no.

The most important reason for categories, and upgrade requirements is safety, so its not lame at all. For a Cat 5 to 4 upgrade, doing a TT is not going to do much at all to teach you how to race safely.
Do your 10 races, use it as an opportunity to learn.

There is a reason the requirement is mass start races.
Also it should be noted that sometimes the cat 4 TT times are faster than cat 3 because the best TT'rs never made the upgrade ;)
Read the rules.

Honestly I don't know how questions like this even comes up. It only takes a few seconds to look at the rules and they are very clear:
"Experience in 10 mass start races. Local Associations may also establish policies where upgrade credit is given for taking a sanctioned rider education clinic."
There is a reason the requirement is mass start races.

I know a guy like this. This is why it would be nice if they had a unique TT classification that is ignored in stage races.

Naw, if he wants to go out and win TTs all season, ignoring mass-start races, that's fine. We don't need TT categories, because what everyone else is doing doesn't affect your race (unless there's a congestion concern).

Or there'll be a TT as part of an omnium and the Masters 35+ 4/5 times are way faster because it's jammed with triathletes and TT guys who take all the points and then don't show up for the crit or circuit race. Not that I'm bitter about it or anything.

I did one TT last year as a 5. Got crushed by a couple of TT specialists. I looked at their racing history and it was only TT's dating back several years.

gawd, i cant imagine the emptiness of those lives. on my list of fun things to do, "TT-ing" ranks just after "eating bags of broken glass" and just above "passing partially digested bags of broken glass".

Here are a lot of dedicated TT guys. That's why ABR was supposedly implementing a TT category.
They are a different breed.
Around here there are two separate populations that mix at TT events. It's like having a star wars and a start trek convention at the same location. We mostly just stare at each other.

And to think I almost asked the same quesiton before I realized it may be better to just read the rules. Whew!

I guess that's true. I don't (haven't) go out and do TT's without it being a part of something else.

The reason I ask is because there is a local mass start TT. So I wasn't sure.

Kind of brings Mt. Diablo Challenge to mind. Although I wouldn't call it TT, more like a competitive group ride.

Lot of us were bored. Thanks for providing a platform for some humor. People bust on each other here, but its mostly good natured.

Google research has been unsuccessful, do you have a link. A "let me google that for you" link with a facepalm will suffice as long as there is an actual result in there...
I just can't imagine how a mass (or "Mass"? I don't understand the correction) start TT could work. Is there no drafting allowed? How do they enforce that if you all start at the same time? If you can draft, how is that any different than any other race?

So is the Mass part just a pun then, or do the riders actually all start together?

Now I'm going to really show you how old I am ...
Back when I was an altar boy when the rites were still in Latin we used to see who could recite the Confìteor the fastest. That really was a Mass start race.

The most frieghtened I've ever been was my first mass as an alter boy...we still did it in Latin then too...Man Father Mahoney was scary old bastard.
Our parish pastor was a hunter and during dove season he would say 8am Mass in 24 minutes, including homily, collection, and two hymns. It was in English, but it might as well have been in Latin since Fr. Shafer just mumbled and the altar boys were the only ones who could hear him anyway. He'd be out the door and gone before we could get the candles extinguished.
I'm not Catholic so I can't relate to any of this, and that's my excuse for not getting the joke :p
lol I was joking about the mass start TT.
I actually laughed when I say how my thread created so many parody threads.
