Has anyone seen it? If so question, what the hell happened to the world? I vote world wide natural disaster, but only due to the lack of wrecked/abandoned military vehicles in the scenes, what say you?

I assumed natural disaster, wasn't it cloudy all the time? so lots of ash in the air?

yup, all the day scenes were pretty gloomy.

The symbolism is quite obvious.

It was a catastrophic Category 5 Jsharr fart. All but those with the best lungs and worst sense of smell died from the gas exposure.

The "what" is completely irrelevant, which is part of the point.

or

the Jsharr conspiracy.

have you read the book? does it explain what happened? If so I'll be all about it. :)

yes, no, because the "what" is purposefully irrelevant. Once you know the what, you start to put blame and inject politics and that wasn't McCarthys intention, of course IMO, but I really doubt it was an oversight.

yeah, I hear you, but when it comes to books and movies I'm the "need to know" type, not my fault, just born that way I guess. BTW I know it was meant to be purposefully irrelevant, but I still need to know ;0) it's just me, and I'm really not the type to place blame or inject politics (when it comes to movies) I just feel I need to know the complete story to enjoy a movie, thats why I hate Steven King, he's the King of movies that need explaining. MHO.

That's what I remember from the book. I didn't see the movie. It also seemed like it happened relatively quickly that why I thought it was something atomic. I guess it could be a meteor. I believe the book also mentioned some willful destruction (arson) by survivors. This was an Oprah book of the month pick. Maybe there are some Oprah book notes out there.

If you need to know, how about this: It's about the inevitable end for us all. The mechanism is irrelevant since it's preordained by our being human. You can't explain it, or defend against it, or protect your family from it, because every day of existence is part of the inexorable march down the road.

Feel better?

Why would I "feel better?" its just a question about a movie dude, take a breath, maybe you'll "feel better," as for "the inevitable end for us all," if I were lucky (or unlucky) enough to live through whatever the end may be I'd still want to know what happened, so I could pass the story down to the new generation and tell them to beware the "whatever" as it was the end of the world as we knew it.

It's because Stephen King is the king of writing novels for people who don't read, if you have problems with the movies based on them, uh, that's not good.

If you enjoy reading at all, you should read it. It creates a world so emotionally encompassing that most people finish it in 1 or 2 sittings. It is disturbing more then depressing, but you accept it because the all the parts fit together beautifully. McCarthy's prose can be dense and baroque but for The Road he created a vocabulary stripped to the bone. If you ever wonder about the human core it's well worth the time.
