Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Starts at our *new* place (Ruth and I) at 0830.

PM me for address, but it is basically near downtown San Mateo or even closer to the Hayward Park Caltrain Station.

36 miles, apx 3300 feet.

Don't be fooled by stats, this is constant up and down with steep but relatively short climbs. I know all of these hills pretty well as all of them except for one small addition were part of various San Mateo Night Rides of last winter.

We have to be done before 1 PM, so the ride has to be short for us.

Here is the route:
http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=96865

- Crystal Springs to Alameda de las Pulgas from downtown San Mateo
- Climb Parrot to CSM and fly down W Hillsdale
- Climb Stairstep climb on Alameda de las Pulgas toward Belmont, and then turn right near the top to extend it on one ridiculous final push on some side roads I know. Continue down Alameda toward Ralston
- Climb the infamous Hastings/Club, nice Bay views as you approach the top
- Then down Halmark/Ralston/Pohlemus to the Pohlemus bike trail which will quickly take you to Canada
- Canada to Edgewood, short fast descent on Edgewood.
- Climb Crestview. Takes you to the same place as Hastings/Club. Hard Climb right from the start, one break halfway up. Pretty sure this is over a mile long of average grade in the teens.
- Then down Halmark/Ralston/Pohlemus to Bunker Hill
- Climb Bunker Hill, hardest part of this road is at the very end. (Of course)
- Down Skyline/Crystal Springs
- Climb Wedgewood /Southdown to Black Mountain. These tough hills were discovered by Paula before she moved over to Loma Mar. Thus they have been nicknamed "The Paula Hills" by night ride participants.
- Descend Skyline/Crystal Springs back to downtown San Mateo

We will probably grab a quick bite downtown on the way back to our place.

That's my trace of the ride. I rode to the start, did the ride with a few additions that Michael added, and then rode home. I feel that it's an elevation graph to be proud of. 9k-ish feet climbed with the high point being below 900ft.

It was hard though. I'm pretty beat tonight.

I see after Woodridge/Southdown, the last climb of the official ride, you guys added Tartan Trail and Ascension.

Ascension was alos part of the old night rides, as well as some rollers on Glendora, on the way back to my old place.

Yes, Michael had no mercy. Kept adding climbs. Ascension felt easy after everything else we'd ridden. Tartan Trail was not easy.

Great ride yesterday. The stick roller gizmo really helps post ride as the legs are not as sore as I was dreading. Tartan trail is a pretty long climb. I got seperated from Chris and Michael after Ascension so I made my way back to my car at the start. I really like that red bike and it's old school feel.

What the....?

Advertised ride of 3,300 ft turns into 9K+ of climbing??!!

Didn't realize that Marco was such a natural marketeer...

It was like 6k of climbing in 50 miles up in San Mateo, and 1500ft of elevation each way over 30 miles to and from. 9k, 110 miles.
