Mountain Biking - MTB valuation: 2004 Giant Rainier

DISCLAIMER: This is not an attempt to sell my bike on BF, and I've asked permission from a Mod to post this.

This bike has taken me all over tarnation, trails, roads, long distance, harsh weather, you name it. I maintain my bikes impeccably, and have modified it quite a bit since purchase in June 2004. Here are her vitals:

21" frame
Avid CPS Disc brakes, Avid BL 1 levers
Mavic X139 wheels
Shimano Deore components (LX rear derailleur)

That's about what's stock that's left.

Replaced:

Cranks - now Nashbar Trekking 48-38-28
Bottom Bracket - with the crank replacement, I had to replace the BB - Nashbar ISIS 68mm/113mm
Cassette - SRAM PG970, but still have the old cassette
Saddle - Yellow Selle Italia
Handlebars - Scott AT2 Bullhorn
Fork - The Judy that came with it was a piece, so I replaced it with a Surly 1X1 rigid.
Pedals - Crank Bros. Candy C - yellow
Tires - kept the stock tires, but mounted (and have 2 sets) of Forte Vera-Trac

Just looking for a ballpark so I can get this rig on the market. She cost me $720 in 2004.

Thanks, 10W. The wheels you see were an experiment, and are now off the bike. Heavy as crap, but spin real nice. Not meant for hucks or drops. They will go with the bike.

I'd have to guess in our market, $350. Just a guess, looking at similar stuff on craigslist.

Yeah, I checked CL too, but no Rainiers. Lots of Yukons and Rincons though. I'm planning on tacking a 20% premium on whatever price I decide is fair as most components have been upgraded. Sound fair? The bike has 95% road miles.

Not much for Giants on craigslist, though if you look at bikes running Deore level stuff, more then a couple years old, the price is about right. Rincon and Yukons are not even in the same group, entry level. You might get dinged due to the rigid fork. Most buyers anymore want the springy thingy.

Start at $400 and see what you get? Sell it as a urban commuter setup, you might get more looks.

That is precisely what it has turned into - an urban commuter. I also have two sets of 1.5" Michelin City slicks, and I still have the Rock Shox Judy fork, but it never really worked well. Would need a rebuild. Have also considered donating it for the tax write-off, but not sure what kind of organization could make use of something above an entry level bike.

Nice rainier mine used to be that color until I got it powder coated candy apple red. I sold it to my dad for $300 because Im a nice guy and because I still get to ride it but Id start at $400
