Bicycle Mechanics - Axle length for S-A AW hub?

I've been given a bicycle with a broken S-A hub.
It's easily enough identifiable as an AW hub on the hub shell, but the left half of the axle is missing.
'How do I determine which length replacement axle to get?
Is the "internal" length the same, with only the protruding length being different(meaning I can measure the dropout width of the bike), or does the axle elngth have to match the hub?

What I don't know if how to figure out which one I need, the 5 3/4 or the 6 1/4. Is it as simple as having enough to deal with the drop out spacing, or is there something more to it?

That depends on the frame. Ha ve you tried measuring the distance between the dropouts? If the bike is designed for fenders and such - I'd go with the 6 1/4" axle.
Well, if the center bit is always the same, then I suppose I can always cut a longer axle down if the excess protrusion would ever become annoying to me...
My intended source for parts claimed that there was a difference to the middle portion of the axle, but also said that he could tell by my hub shell that I needed the shorter axle - so that was what I ordered.
Anyhow, the new axle arrived with the sun pinion as an integral part of the axle, while the original axle apparently had the sun pinion fitted like a sleeve.
Anyone knows if these axles are interchangeable, or if I need to go looking for another part?
