How do you handle the neighbor's loose pets? Consider that the nice friendly chat had already been done several times but to no avail.

No stories of animal cruelty please.

I found a way :p but I'll tell y'all later. I kinda feel bad about it. :o

Scare the s**t out of the animal. Several times and they'll learn.

What if it's a big fearless dog? What if the dog is jumping over the fence? (The latter being the problem I encountered)

What if it's a big fearless dog? What if the dog is jumping over the fence? (The latter being the problem I encountered) Then your problem is not the dog. It is the owner. Heart to heart chat is required.

Get a bigger dog.

My dogs ARE bigger.

I already had the talk with her, many times as stated in my first post. And it's because her dog was in heat and wanted my dog. Badly. All of my four footed members have had the surgery so there is no worry there, I just didn't want her mutt over here all of the time. Especially when I have a backyard full of guests.

Scare it with one of those blow horns people have at football games or get a bigger fence - with razor wire.

Electric fence. Of course your zone laws may disagree. We have an electric fence around our sheep, my dog just learned not to put his nose to it. Boy was he upset!!!

A water hose with a good strong jet does wonders. Dogs don't like getting wet from a hose, for some reason. Stops barking too if you have that problem with a dog. Don't use a power washer though, that is a bit over the top. I would assume that you should use a firehose either...

Train it to act like a good dog in your yard. Easy to do in most cases, especially with dog treats as a bribe. With enough treats as a bribe you may be able to get it to jump back over the fence.

We have dog guests from time to time. When it's time for them to go home I go inside and bring Bailey in. Eventually they leave.

At least make the dog a good friend for other possible training ideas.

Or call the dog officer to take her away (if you know they will take good care of the dog). Keep doing it, and tell the neighbors where the dog went so they have to keep going to get it. Eventually they may get tired of that. Eventually the pound will get tired of them and probably will fine them. Every city has laws about this. Mine were on line.

Throw a steak back over the fence every time the dog jumps into your yard.

Throw a steak over the other neighbors fence, pass the dog on to the next neighbor. Keep passing the dog to other neighbors. Sorry, but that seems like so much fun.

Or train the dog to come stay with you and keep it when ever you feel like it. That might motivate the owners.

Call the dog whisperer. Have you seen his methods? They work. He's expensive.

OOoo don't tempt me with something like this. It's most likely illegal here in Cali since it doesn't have an orange tip on it.

The dog was constantly jumping over the fence. I would carry the dog over to the owner and plop the dog into her arms. By the time I made it back home that dog would be in my yard again. She would leave if I bring my dogs in but I shouldn't have to keep them inside all day and night.

Sometimes I would see her hanging halfway over the fence and I would scream at her to get back home but she would just continue and come all the way into my yard and jump all over me.

You're going up against a baser instinct in an animal. You've got to trump that instinct with another...fear. If you're too squeamish to use a pellet rifle then you're going to have to improve that fence mightily. I'd suggest concertina wire. Since I'm sure you don't want your back yard to look like a correctional facility, you have but one option. All the scolding in the world (to both dog and owner) isn't going to stop the animals need to get down. You've got to make that dog afraid...seriously.

I have been looking at this:
It is a neighbor problem, not a dog problem.

Your neighbor can only see life from their view point.

Here is what I would do.

The dog next door is lonesome.
Each day before you leave, place all of your dogs inside the neighbor's yard.

The neighbor can feed them and clean up the poop.

Sixty Fiver

If you are returning the dog and she is choosing to make her way right back to you instead of staying with her owners there is something seriously wrong here.

The dog obviously adores you and it seems that she sees you and your dogs as her pack so naturally wants to be with you.

Her owners need to establish a better relationship with their dog and the issue may stem from a lack of attention on their part.

I do like the idea of putting your dogs in their yard.

There is probably a law similar to mine, not allowing dogs in heat to run free. Eventually when people get fined enough they do something about it. It's illegal.

Here's my town law about dogs in heat.

(b) Every female dog or other animal in heat shall be kept confined in a
building or secure enclosure or in a veterinary hospital or boarding kennel in such manner
that such female dog or other animal cannot come in contact with another dog or animal,
except for intentional breeding purposes.
(c) Any animal described in subsections (a) and (b) of this section found at
large shall be impounded by the animal control officer and may not be reclaimed by the
owner, keeper or person having charge or custody of the animal until payment to the city
treasurer clerk, or animal control officer, at the animal control center has been made as
provided in section 3-8. Any dog or other animal may, the first time it is impounded for
being a public nuisance, be reclaimed as provided in section 3-32, but such animal may
not be reclaimed when so impounded on the second or subsequent occasions, unless such
reclamation is authorized by a court having jurisdiction in the matter, provided that when
in the judgment of the animal control officer or any police officer in the city an animal
should be destroyed for humane reasons, such animal may not be reclaimed.

Dogs are not that hard to figure out... 99% of the time you will find that a "bad" dog has a bad owner... not to say that the person is evil but that they just don't understand how to train a dog.

My Min Pin was a very troubled dog when I got her with many behavioral issues that were not related to her previous owner but rather, a friend of that owner who abused my beloved little Mags and she probably had a little small dog syndrome as well.

Thankfully... she has never been aggressive and really likes people.

She still has her moments but for the most part has become quite an excellent and well adjusted companion for me and my family... she knows her place in the pack... which is just one step over the Shih Tzu.

If you don't mind giving up a bit of real estate, and you really want to keep unwanted guests out of your yard- dig a trench on your side of the fence, then build another fence on your side to keep your dogs in the yard.

Fill the trench with water. It doesn't have to be too deep, just enough to ensure that critter can't dig under or jump over your fence. Install some sort of aeration system to keep the skeeters from breeding. And if you ran an electrical current, it would announce any unwanted 2 legged animals as well.

The next time the dog jumps the fence, chain it up in your yard and call animal control. Or simply chain it up, then take it to the vet and have it spayed. Return it after the surgery.

The only experience I've ever had with animals that belonged to someone else on our property was when I was in HS. Two of our neighbor's cows got loose and onto our property. We corralled them next to our barn & called the sheriff. The sheriff told us that we could charge the owner rent and for the feed, and if he didn't come get them after a specified time from when he knew we had them, they were ours. It took him a week to come get them, but he paid us a couple hundred dollars (from what I remember).

100% true...but all the training in the world goes right out the window when in heat. ;)

The fence is new, it's a 7 foot overlapping privacy fence. I just paid $2,500 for it and I don't want to have to rebuild one and make a moat. The water would just absorb anyway.

I love the idea of letting my dogs go over there but lugging them over the fence would be hard and they'd end up at animal control.

I don't think I should be the one to pay for her spaying so I did what I though took care of the issue so far.....

The fence between us is wooden 7 ft, but the fence that lines the back is cyclone. She climbs up the cyclone (that has barbed wire on top) then works her way to the top of the wooden fence and stands on it like a cat would.

Go to the shelter, find the ugliest male mutt there, get it, put down a fake name and the neighbor's address, drop it off, problem solved.

Just kidding.

I'm assuming you take care of yours within legal guidelines (watch that, they can change without warning -- they did her 2 years ago); call Animal Control and report the neighbor not containing/restraining the dog. Just watch your own -- some people take that as an open invitation to F with you. They did with me... successfully, lost our husky after an UNpublicized change in animal regulations.

Siu Blue Wind

DX - I'm pretty good about keeping my dogs under control and trained. Almost every house here has a dog and I pride myself on how well behaved mine are. But thanks for the tip. I'll keep my eye out for any changes. :)

If the dog is in heat, there probably is no training you can do until that is over. Is there some reason you don't want to just make a phone call and have the dog taken to the pound, and have the owner fined for having a dog in heat loose in your yard? Fines eventually stop most people from doing something like that. That's what they are designed to do. As long as you tell the owner after the dog is taken to the pound, I would guess there is no inhumane treatment of the dog. They just go get her back.

Get some rags or some fake fur about the color/size of the dog.

Next time the dog comes over, secure it. Cage/ Garage/ Basement, etc.

Bundle the fur/rags out by the curb or in the street a few doors away. Pour ketchup all over it.

Call the neighbor and as if that's her dead dog by the street.

While she's freaking out on the way to the decoy. Get dog and let it loose. Holler "Here she is!"

When she sees poochie, she'll realize how grateful that's poochie is OK, never to let the mutt outta her site again.

Again, deny everything.

Get your biggest sharpest knife, grab ger by the scruff of her neck, stick the knife in her heart, skin her, hang her on the area of the fence that she jumps over, that'll keep her from jumping it again. BTW, I'm not talking the dog, I'm talking the owner. ;0)

Okay fine.

I used food color and put different colored spots on her. Put a drop and rubbed it in a circular motion. Used all colors all over the dog. Used an old rope, tied her to the front of her house then called my neighbor and asked her what the heck was tied to her tree.

Poor thing looked like an Easter Egg.

You should have heard her scream. She thought that someone tried to poison her through her skin and kept her as an indoor dog since.

The reason I didn't want to call Animal control is because it's $250 to get her out and I didn't want to do that to my neighbor.
