Most quality Italian specialty shops will have them fresh packed in salt..

I prefer fresh ... the canned are just way too mushy for me.

Fresh is tastier than canned. I like the best when they are rolled in corn meal and grilled with a side of piri piri sauce. And yes, lots of crusty bread. Although canned is better in a sandwich.

Never had them fresh. I like the canned ones in the green chilies and the red hot sauce.

Canned in hot sauce...

They sure lower your cholesterol.

I used to eat them at work until I was confronted about the smell.

I like the oval cans with them packed in tomato sauce. I have noticed over the past decade or so that the tomato sauce has gotten thinner and not as.. saucey. I think I'll start making my own sauce.

I like canned sardines, but have never had them fresh. I did have some absolutely delicious anchovies on the coast of Italy, caught by the local fisherman early that morning. Fabulous!

Sardines?

How's this for common sense at work. Mrs Z grew up in the Philippines, and loves sardines. When we send boxes to the Philippines (hers and other folks'), the two most frequently packed foodstuffs are 1. Spam, and 2. Sardines.

ok we're to the point of trivia here. Now for the facepalm.

Where were the sardines canned?

... the Philippines.

Aye caramba.

and for the record - I avoid those stinky little fish like they were radioactive.

I acquired a taste for them living with my ex wife's eating disorders. Any other snack left in the cupboard would get wiped out. Cookies? She'd eat all but one so she "didn't eat them all". I'd swear she was relieved when we had kids just so she could blame them. Sardines were always there where I left them. I'm also fond of kippers.

My Father loves them. So by extension I can't tolerate them. Go figure. Same reason I hate Cilantro.

I'm glad to see you've overcome... no, mastered your bait obsession.

I prefer an occasional can of smoked oysters in the car while driving home from the Dollar General Store.

At least I'm not texting.
