I'm using some existing gear to finish of my commuter & light touring bike.

I've got a Sram S350 cyclocross double crankset with 38 & 46t chainrings that I will install on the bike, this will work well when I commute.

I may install a triple on this bike in the future. I'd like to install an IRD Alpina Triple Front derailleur. http://store.interlocracing.com/alfrde.html

Can I just adjust the stops to allow it to work with a double?

I don't know about that particular derailleur, but I still have the "triple" tiagra front derailleur on my 'cross bike even though i've now switched to a sram rival compact double crankset. Works for me, with the original triple shifter even.

Probably, but its not optimal.

What shifters is it designed to work with? The site doesn't say.

According to the Harris website: http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/derailers-front.html

"The only currently available front derailer that is designed for mid-range ("compact road") triple chainwheels
and compatible with Shimano "road" (drop handlebar) STI shifter indexing".
