So I am sick. My rapid strep test came back negative but the doctor believes I have it or something similar. Another test was taken and I'll find out for sure tomorrow or something. So now I have to take 3 penicillin a day for 10 days. I started yesterday so I took 2 since it was the afternoon. I went to bed somewhat late and I woke up at 5am(probably 5 hrs of sleep) with a ear ache from hell. My throat isn't as bad as yesterday but shouldn't things be getting better not worse? I want to die right now.

Sending along well wishes for a speedy recovery. I've had strep a couple of times and I was shocked how painful it was. I found sucking on ice to be helpful.

Want me to make you some chicken soup?

No joke.

EDIT: I've been looking for an excuse to make some chicken soup recently, and a big pot of it is too much for my mom, girlfriend, and myself to handle.

heating pad on your earache. if you don't own one, put some uncooked rice in a baggie & microwave for 2 minutes. when it is comfortablely warm, use it like a heating pad.

I felt a cold coming on the other day. Took 8 garlic oil pills, a zinc pill, a ginger pill, and 10 drops of oil of oregano. Cold was gone in an hour. But of course that was caught at the first signs, and that's why I was able to get rid of it. Not gonna help you any.

In your situation, I'd be taking some Vicodin. :twitchy:

Haha thanks for the offer but I'm not a soup fan. Unless it is pin rice noodle soup. That stuff is bomb.

The first sign I got was I woke up with a sore neck and throat. Took a bunch of pills and chugged really hot water. Didn't work this time. Honestly though I wish I did have Vicodin haha. That was the first thing I thought of with this ear crap. Plus I've been watching House since there isn't anything else to do.

Man, I used to get strep so often that I was *used* to it, and one day it developed into scarlet fever as I did nothing about it. Got a huge shot in the butt and I literally haven't been sick since (that was like 8th or 10th grade). I don't remember what I did to help. I think I just had lots of popsicles and the equivalent of Judge Judy back in the day... If we had FOO back then, I never would have noticed the scarlet fever, either!

Have you tried using a pencil to dislodge the... Kidding For the throat and ears I use Mentholatum. Sounds like it shouldn't help but it does. It opens everything up. Allows the ears to drain.

I gargle with a salt water 3-4 times a day when I get either a sore throat or strep, the first time I got strep I didn't listen and suffered for it, the second time I tried the salt water gargle and it worked great, as did the third time I got it, then I starteed using it when I just got a sore throat and it works great for that too (along with the antibiotics) it really works pretty damn good, the little nastys festering in your throat can't stand salt, hit 'em hard with it and you should get better a lot faster. =0) I can't help you with the ear thing, sorry. =0(

it has to be 'taste like the sea' salty.

the salt water sucks out the fluid from the bacteria (which is what strep throat is)

You'll get better. Its only strep. Miserable, but only strep.

And if you are in pain that Tylenol or aspirin can't knock back (from the ear) call your doc and see if s/he will call in a stronger painkiller for you.

I agree, partially out of caution. I've had strep a couple times, but I don't remember ever having ear pain with it.

The last time I had to take erythromycin, because it turns out I'm allergic to penicillin and I wasn't going to shell out the money for xythromax. It turns out erythromycin causes your stomach muscles to contract, and I guess also kills off all your stomach bacteria...I think. The short of it is, I got a hollow feeling in my stomach the next day that felt like hunger pangs. I figured I hadn't been eating enough because of the sore throat, so I stuffed myself for two days before I went looking for more info and found that when the doc said "upset stomach" was a possible side effect she really meant stomach pain. For about five days I constantly felt like I was starving. I found that yogurt with active cultures helps though.

Thanks guys. I didn't intend for this thread to be for sympathy. Was just lookin for advice and what not.
Anyways, I feel somewhat better. The first day of the semester is today. Lovely part is my ear makes everything sound funny and I can't hear too well with the constant ringing. I tried that heating pad against the ear thing. It worked till I took it off.

Hot water is good at soothing a sore throat, but it doesn't have any immune system boosting capabilities that I know of.

And yeah, vicodin is some good stuff. I think canada has it right, selling lower end vicodin and such with no presciption. It is by far the best way to feel better with a cold, at least for me.

Try adding some fresh lemon juice and honey to the hot water. Then you have a boost of Vit C and all the wonderful, soothing, healing elements of honey. I had some last night and it was yummy.

+1 on the honey, my kid just made a face rub out of non coated aspirin and honey, told me the honey is a natural anti bacterial? she told me what the aspirin was for but I forgot. ('cause I'm old I guess.)

Honey is okay for sore throats, but good oil of oregano in the dropper form is better in my experience. It relieves some pain, and is a powerful anti fungal, antiseptic, and anti viral. It's so good I dedicated my avatar to it. ;)

The antibiotics /penicillin will work. But remember throat pain is like any other pain, take tylenol. Yes popsicles!

Hey Fuzzy, have you had your tonsils removed? If not you should as I too had constant strep, ear infections and tonsil infections, I haven't had any of the mentioned since my tonsils were removed, and the doc that did the surgery told us before the surgery that this would be the case.

Nope, this is the first time I've had strep. I think this ear thing might be swimmers ear but who knows.

Yes popsicles!

I wouldn't suggest that, unless it's the pure fruit kind. Few things are worse for your immune system than refined sugar.

wabbit
01-20-10, 08:24 PM
yes, not necessarily popsicles, but there are the natural fruit juice kind, or you can just make your own in the freezer.

as for tonsils, they don't usually like to remove them...tonsils are very important for your immune system. I used to get tonsil infections and asked about that. The dr said that if i got a few really bad infections then maybe. However, i don't get them anymore. The last time was about 3 years ago and it wasn't that bad. They gave me zithromax and that stuff works FAST! I can't take penicillin.

I could be worse.

I got sick right after Thanksgiving. Had a massive sinus infection. It was so bad that the mucus had backed up into my tear ducts & would crust up my eye at night. I missed 3 days of work because of it. My doctor put me on an antibiotic and gave me hydrocodone for the coughing.

Within a day of finishing the antibiotics, I came down with a sore throat. It was so bad that it hurt to swallow. My wife checked my throat and saw that my tonsils were swollen and had white patches on them, a clear sign of infection. My doctor gave me a lidocaine viscous solution to gargle, as well as a different antibiotic.

The day after I finished the 2nd round of antibiotics, an upper respiratory infection developed. I was coughing every 20-30 seconds, and barely got 1.5 hours of sleep one night. Unfortunately I'd run out of the hydrocodone. I called the doctor yet again, and he prescribed a third antibiotic, a steroid, and more hydrocodone.

I finished the 3rd round of antibiotics last week, and am finally feeling close to 100% healthy. It's been over 1.5 months since I've felt this good.

Here's hoping yours doesn't get that bad.
