I am planning on going on a four week tour in February/March and have stumbled across some cheap return flights to Marrakech. I would like to hear from anyone who has touring experience in Morocco.

My current thinking of the route would involve going from Marrakech to the coast at Agadir. From there I would head to Zagora and then onto Merzouga before turning and heading back to Marrakech over the mountains. Would this be a feasible route in the time that I have? Does anyone know anything about the surface quality of the roads in these areas?

I would intend to stealth camp most nights. Would I have any trouble finding suitable places? Would this be safe?

I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me answer any of these questions or had any other advice that they could share. Thanks

Hi, we've been in Morocco several times and once for bike touring.

Marrakech to Essaouira and then Agadir is certainly possible and feasible. The N1 from Agadir to Tiznit is also possible but much busier and not much worth seeing. Maybe worth busing it for this stretch?

After that you can head inland to Tafraoute, Ighrem, Souk Tleta de Tagmoute, Tata, Zagora and Merzouga.

It's pretty much an exact reverse of the trip we did in 2006, except we started from the north and didn't go to Marrakech.

Very bad luck aside (because that can happen anywhere), you'll be fine. If you camp in the vicinity of a village, the local police may come to check your passport but it's no big deal. Sometimes a local shepherd will discover you but they're almost always just curious, or want to offer you bread or tea and make sure you'll be warm enough.

There are plenty of campgrounds in Morocco too but bargain, bargain, bargain! Usually they quote you the same price as for an RV and then you say "but I don't need electricity" etc etc. Stealth camping is a great idea because the campgrounds for the most part are overpriced and little more than big parking lots for the RVs that come down from Europe for the winter.

We have some notes here, which are a bit outdated now but hopefully still helpful:

Hi,

okay it's 12 years ago... I don't see any problems for your route. I only cycled from Rabat to Casablanca at the Atlantic coast and this wasn't very interesting.

You can camp anywhere you want. But the people know that you're there. If you are lucky you'll get a hot coffee when you wake up.
