XT rear derailleur, juicy 7, saddle, and potentially rear derailleur hanger (steel frame so the whole frame) are dead.

Worst part is it was my friend who did it. So he's hurt, and it was on my bike.

Sigh.

I mean, I had to rush home and get the car and take him to the hospital because of a potentially broken leg.

Mind you, in the car he ate all of my KFC.

Oh man !!! So you mean now you gotta buy new chicken ?

Sorry to hear. The most important thing is that road bike of yours wasn't damaged.

mzeffex
01-18-10, 07:08 PM
Oh yeah. I was riding that, luckily I was in the road and he was on the sidewalk. It was the fault of a fallen power line that someone so cleverly looped around the sidewalk. Caught his (my) bar.

Bet you the power company gets sued.

mzeffex

that would be nice.

Power lines are not supposed to be left like that,

mzeffex
01-18-10, 07:34 PM
They aren't. There are issues though like he had no lights or helmet. I had all of the above. The adrenaline cooled and now the damage is sinking in. I'm really pissed. :notamused:

Lucky it wasn't a live wire. He would have a perm right now. Please wish him well for me. Got any pics of the bike?

mzeffex
01-18-10, 08:25 PM
I know! I was thinking that. I ride to work and from work on that route every day and make sure I avoid that wire. I'll go take some pics.

Got word of the injuries. My friend has a broken foot, sprained thumb joint, and had to get his chin stitched. He dragged his chin on the ground
Can't tell but there are chunks of the "X" missing and the allen bolt that holds on the derailleur to the frame is all messed up. Hanger is very bent

That's all missing, bent rail
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj86/dolphinsnats/44.jpg
This one hurts.. all silver is torn up. Even the anodized red bit :(. Ripped hose.

But on the other hand.. new tape. Also picked up some nice fenders for $5. Guy threw in a free nice helmet.

yikes, that sucks, good thing they make more bikes and can fashion your old one into a leg if his is not salvageable.

Dannihilator

At least it's steel and can be bent back.

mzeffex
01-18-10, 08:49 PM
I don't want to not use the bike. I love this thing. Also, yeah, for the first time I'm happy it is steel.

That's ok, I had a crash while training today for the upcoming season @ Trexlertown.

Had some kid dash right out in front of me while I was accelerating in a sprint which caused me to go off the road @ 30mph and have the front sink into the mud and sent me OTB.

You race track? Cool - I'd love to get up there some time and at least see it even if I don't ride.

Yep. Dan swings the other way. Hehe!

Thanks for posting the pics.

Sorry about the bike and I hope your friend heals up quickly. Remind him that it's not a good idea to use his chin to stop. :p

Will do. I also tell him to wear a helmet but he won't.

Just spoke to him again: RIGHT after they finished the cast they came in and said it needs to come off because he needs surgery. He shattered two of the bones in his foot.

Oh no!! Shattered?? That's crazy!

You know what? My friend would never ride with a helmet and I told him that I won't be riding with him anymore.

mzeffex

Yeah, I know, crazy. I told his dad that he wasn't wearing a helmet. Apparently he told his dad that he was. I mean, he's a good friend of mine and I try to get him to wear one. Maybe he will now.

NOOO! Not the KFC!

Glad your friend is going to be okay. Sounds like that foot might be hurting him for a while.

The bike can be fixed. As for the battle scars it has, well, they just prove that the bike is enjoyed. :thumb:

Update: Two surgeries. He will have one wednesday where they will put metal rods that will stick out of his skin in, and will remain there for 6 weeks. Nasty.

Then in 6 weeks, another surgery to remove them. Should be on the bike in 3 - 4 months.

How the hell did he break his foot? Seems like an odd thing to break while riding a bike.

mzeffex
01-22-10, 02:26 PM
I think when he caught the handlebar it slammed his right side into the ground. (he broke his right foot) The right pedal plowed into his ankle, which is what shattered it.

01-22-10, 03:26 PM
The pedal plowed into my leg as well when I wrecked. Luckily, it hit the meatiest part of my calf, so nothing broken, just a huge ugly bruise.

mzeffex
01-22-10, 03:31 PM
I know it hurt him (obviously) because the end of the pedal is mushed in

I took my friend out for the first time during the summer, and he fractured his toe... off a tree lol.
I kinda felt bad, because the way he fractured it, doc wouldnt sign off on his cross country or football papers.. he didnt get to play

Duct tape and some fresh chicken is all you need.

Glad your friend lives to ride again. Hopefully this lesson brings wisdom.

Your friend is damn lucky that his injuries are what they are and do not include a closed head injury. I have ridden with plenty of people who have crashed while riding including myself. Many have had broken bones or lacerations and even a few concussions where the helmuts were ruined. We always wear helmets and have alwways recovered to ride again. I hope he recovers well and will consider his good fortune.

My ankle is still swollen from a fall last October. I was surprised how badly I racked up the foot and ankle. And I stayed on the pedal all the way through the slide.

Surgery was today. He's asleep so I haven't heard from him.

He still won't wear a helmet though. His logic is they won't help at all at over 7 mph, so why wear one at all?

..dumbass.

That little tumble off that ~18 foot drop I had the other day was at well over 7 mph - I'd say my helmet (along with all of that other crap I was wearing) saved my ass - and my head.

Last year 3 times, mainly due to my event focus for the year TT and pursuit. This year I'm going to be racing a lot, doing the points racing and omnium.

Trexlertown.
