I'm looking into buying a used Trek 4300 mountain bike from craigslist this evening. It's listed as "brand new, never ridden". Is there an easy way to tell which year model it is? The color is orange with blue. Also, can you suggest anything I might look for to determine the quality? I'm very new to the mountain biking world. Thanks!!

That's a 2003. If that's not it, check at BikePedia (http://www.bikepedia.com/Default.aspx). Type "Trek 4300" into the search field and go through the list. Colors are usually year specific.
The 4300 is a pretty low end mountain bike. The MSRP for the 2003 was $340. Don't pay much over $125 for it. $150 max.

That's the one! Thanks for the quick reply, I knew someone here would know better than me. :-) They're asking $250 for it (claiming that it sells for $500). I was planning to talk them down on the price anyhow, but at least now I can sound educated. Thanks!!

you really have to watch craigslist I recently saw a guy posting a bike that was 10 years old claiming it to be a 2009 bike..... you can find good deals but you definitely have to know what you are looking at when you go buy something.

Over priced. A new one sells for around $500 but theirs is 6 years old. Keep looking.
