yes you can....just don't spend all of it, cause you'll probably need an antibiotic afterwards.

Luckily we haven't had too many issues with Shardul. I think we've spent about $2000 with immunizations and flying to Costa Rica and back.

Stupid beagle tore his ACL, drivers side. He was 10 pounds overweight. Surgery was $2,300. Pre-op stuff was @$340.
I even spent $130 to get an hamster xrayed. What's a dad to do when your 8 year old is crying. I can't believe I'm such a soft touch.
You gotta admit, Buddrow looks like Elvis.

As my old military buddies would say, "Luv" that you pay for is cheaper in the long run.

Does he like fried PB and banana sandwiches?
The most was about $450.00. That was cheap I think. Daisy had come down with a case of distemper. I vaccinate my dogs but the vet said a stray could still get a dog sick through a fence. I got her to the vet early so she was lucky.

Just paid 1800 for stones to be removed.
They gave him a scuba suit instead of a cone..

One of my daughters spent over four grand on a stupid dog that got loose and got hit by a car. I didn't know what to say, I was flabbergasted. I spent about five hundred on a dog once, but he was my buddy!

Can you imagine the new bike we could have got for those coins? lucky dogs!
We spent over $300 to have tumors removed from a pair of rats we had once. $100 on one and $200 on the other (tumors returned on that one). This didn't include the medicines that went along with the recovery process. Just the surgeries.

Exactly. My miniature pinscher just cost me a cyclocross bike. This past December my wife and I spent $1,900 for the femoral head ostectomy surgery and $420 for the pre-surgery bloodwork and x-rays. The vet technicians removed the staples for "free" though! Gee, thanks......

My baby Luci got a foxtail from the back yard logged in her ear canal area that tried to push threw and out the back side of her ear.. cant remember how much it cost but i remember for the financial situation i was in it was really pushing it but just like any child i didn't think twice, i couldnt even begin too imagine the pain that it would have developed into :(
Ever sense then her ear has never stood up while the other is usually always up. Little personality she will always have :D GOD I LOVE THAT DOG!!

I spent $600 on an ER visit for my kitten less than 24 hours after we brought him home from the shelter. The next day they told us we were going to have to spend about $3000 to have a "foreign object" removed from his intestines - but there was no foreign object, so the humane society covered the cost of the unnecessary surgery.

I spent a lot (trips to U Penn because the vet said that was the best place). But it was worth it all to know I did everything I could and he lived a longer and painfree life.

Im really glad they covered that, would have been very disheartening to spend all that money for nothing to be there... GLAD YOU DID THOUGH! :D

I sprent around 1500.00 on my old buddy Jazzy, she had a tumor in her uterus, she died of cancer three months later. :(
(Lovin' that avatar! ;) )
Single visit ?? About $5500.
TAken all together over a pet's life? Too much to even think about.

In some ways, pets are better than real family...
$5 per pill for Baytril, an antibiotic, which finally did the trick in curing my new pooch's ear infection. Total for this 'free' dog so far, ~$500. He's worth it.

Granted you don't do anything extreme there always happy to see you, hold no grudges, and at least with dogs when you spend a lot of time with them they really mold into your schedule and your attitude and temperament... i miss having a dog in my house :(

So true. When cycle-commuting, I used to be able to almost sneak into the house before the hound knew it. Now he's waiting with chin on the front picture window sill every time when I roll up.

Thousands. Our pom had catarac surgery. The surgery and the continuing care was extremely expensive but it gave her 5 years of sight.

Spent a total of about $5k last year when our 11 year old weimaraner got gastric torsion (aka bloat). Sadly she didnt' survive the stress and shock to her internal organs from the bloat, the surgery, and then coming down off the meds. We knew the approximate cost, and we knew that her chances of survival were less than 20%, and we also weighed the fact that she was 11 (pretty old for a big dog) but still in good health otherwise. Looking back, assuming she didn't suffer because of the surgery, I would make the same decision. I hate having to put a dog down.
For anyone with a large, deep chested dog -- if your dog ever starts to drool for no good reason and act abnormal, lethargic -- get it to the vet ASAP. We didnt' recognize the signs.

It was kind of an off handed post, but the reality is that I grew up on a big farm, we had lots of animals, and we did not have $$$ to take care of something that could not be sent to the stock yards in Indy. So the post does ring true to an extent.
I would like to see some of these bleeding hearts raise a calf, take it to the 4-H fair treating it like a member of the family, then selling it when the judging is complete and eating it for most of the winter. Or better yet, spend a Saturday castrating the piglets. I could go on and on.
You get a somewhat different out look on life and death after a while. Some times I am glad my kids were never subjected to that, and some times I wish they had been.

I wouldn't want my kids to look at life that way, don't get me wrong, they know all about this type thing and they have a firm grip on life and death, including food animals, but they love life, no matter how big or how small, and we all love it that way.

My friends dog Nikki was kinda funny, they had a Camaro that was pretty suped up and it had kind of a unique sound to it i guess but to me it sounded just like any muscled up car. Every day as he was coming down the hill toward the house before we could even hear it we knew he was coming home because nikki would just be sitting there by the door waiting for him to walk in lol

My total out of pocket to have both hips replaced was less than my total out of pocket for that beagle. I could be riding carbon fiber for what we spent on getting healthy. But I can't imagine not having the little beggar at my side.

Don't remember the exact cost, $800? maybe, but my lab/dane mix nearly sliced one of the pads off one of his front paws from the stupid metal landscape edging we used to have. He's fine now but it was fairly amusing to see the poor guy try and get through the house with a cone on his head. You need a pretty big cone for a 100lb dog. A bull in a china shop comes to mind.

I've spent about $3000 on my siamese for his bladder stones and pulling some bad teeth.
I've spent about $6000 on the orange tabby who somehow managed to rupture his colon even though he is an indoor cat.
So much for mutt cats from the shelter. Mine are more expensive than purebreds at this point.

About $3K, back in the late 70s for a male cat with feline urinary syndrome- he needed a perineal urethrostomy. Look it up- not an operation most guys would want. It was so expensive because the only people who did it at the time were veterinary urologists. Poor spot- he was never the same after that (gee, go figure...). But we loved him all the same. He was always a bit crazy anyway- a silver-spotted tabby with a personality to match!
