Mountain Biking - Is it possible to put an 8 inch rear coil shock on my current 2 in coil shock?

Hi guys,

I have a dual suspension 24" Mongoose XR-75 bike I bought from Wally World (Walmart) 3 years ago when I was only in 7th grade. I have upgraded the bike and its still doing good, nothing broken like you might think from a big box deparment store. However, because my rear shock is only 2 inches of travel, I weigh 121 pounds, and it compresses too easily, I was wondering if I could buy a much longer suspension coil, like the RockShox Vivid 4.1. Will this fit on my bike?

Not to be critical or anything, but your bike is worth a fraction of the shock. Doing so would not only probably be impossible, but monetarily illogical. My recommendation: Pick up a decent bike used for the price of the shock.

Sure why not? The Vivid is a good shock. Would be a nice upgrade from whats on there now. Definitely post up pics:thumb:

I doubt the Vivid shock will mate up with that bike frame. The shock's eye to eye length is way too long and the mounting tabs are way too wide to fit the bike's mounting brackets. I also doubt you would be able to find mounting hardware to fit the shock to the bike. The piggyback unit would probably hit the frame due to clearance issues.

Vivid shocks, like most coil shocks, do not come with a coil spring. You have to order those separately. If you plan on keeping the bike, then I would see about getting a new, heavier spring. Just measure your existing coil spring's overall length and inside diameter, go to eBay, and look for a replacement. Either that or get yourself a new bike. The money you would spend on a new shock can go towards a new bike or a really good used one.

Dude my cousin has the exact same setup on his "goose" you can make it fit you just need to hammer it in there and jam in the bolts. might take 2 or 3 guys to jam it in there but it wont bottom out anymore.......

If you're going to do it, wouldn't it be a lot easier to buy a new stiffer coil for the shock you already have? With that said, my vote still says buy a new bike first.

Everyone here is right - - do not mess with a new shock for that bike. First of all, it being a very small frame, it's a non-standard eye-to-eye (the shock mount eyes) length, so you won't find an adequate replacement. Secondly, the bike is not worth spending that kind of money on (trust me, I know this firsthand - - don't ask). Thirdly, if you were to put any larger shock on, it would throw the entire geometry of the bike off dangerously.

Best to start saving for a new non-discount-store bike to replace it with.

On to posting photos: The best way is to start a free subscription to a photo-hosting site like ImageShack or PhotoBucket and use their easy interface to upload. Once they are there, you can create an easy link to embed them in your post either directly by bracketing the photo's unique URL with bracketing or letting the reply window do it for you by clicking the little picture icon and pasting the URL into that.

I would worry about buying anything for that bike. However since its a cheap coil shock it might have a compression ring so that you can stiffen it up. give that a try while you save for a decent bike, it will be worth it
