I'm somewhat interested in building up a spare rear wheel by using a bolt on cog on a disc brake mount (a la velo solo, etc). I have a spare front disc brake hub laying around and I'm wondering how possible it would be to swap out the axle and space it to act as a rear hub. Anyone done this? Any reason why I shouldn't give it a shot?

Have you considered chainline issues?

I've done it. Used a 10mm axle and cones from a spare rear hub, spacers arranged for no dish on a 130mm OLD, the chain line came out at 46mm, perfect for the outer ring of a road double. Can't tell you about the longevity off the smaller wheel bearings, I haven't ridden enough to find out.
