Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - seeking encouragement

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
It happened, I got older and fatter. It wasn't supposed to happen, I remember clearly at age 28 (last bicycle race I was in) thinking, "as long as I keep riding I'll be fit when I get old". 26yrs later went to the doc for a heinous cold and warned the staff I probably had high blood pressure. Turns out that 800calories of beer won't get burned off with 300calories of cycling. Back on sobriety which worked for 12yrs, on blood pressure medicine. Now for the obvious part. Reducing caloric intake and increasing caloric output.

It's never to late to get back into shape. Congratulations, the first step is admitting that you have a problem. I know it's from AA but it works for any addiction.
Keep us posted on how your progress goes, we're here for ya.
Calories in must be less than calories out in order to acheive weight loss. I wish there was a magic pill and I invented it because I would be rich!
You have to find the right motivator and that has to come from within. You have to want to do it for you. I also raced many moons ago and went through the busy life we all do. Also ended up at 225 when I did a reality check. After 3 years of diet and saddle time, I am back down to 170 and feel great. I even started racing Tricross last year and do a Century a week in season. I am moving more towards brevets as I have come to like the endurance events.
Just ride!

It can happen to the best of us. I used to run and xc-ski ultras, and do triathlons 18 or so years ago. I'm a far cry from that physique these days, although I've managed to get myself back into great condition by cycling. I was early stage hypertension with my blood pressure before I got things back under control.

Strength to you on your sobriety, I know from personal experience how difficult that one can be. I also know that you'll see some immediate big progress by cutting out the booze. Sounds to me like you've already got a plan, and you're well on your way.
