Road Cycling - old frames and new components and vice versa

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi, I'm thinking about building a bike pieced together with parts found in my local online classified. It seems like there are a lot of good deals on parts in my area......(shimano 105 frt and rear deraillers, 105 crank and bottom bracket for only $50 OBO). There are also a bunch of frames being advertised.

My next quest is can you install a modern parts group on an older bare frame and fork. About how old can I go before I run into problems with compatibility.

Before I stripped it down to single speed I was using newish shimano parts with my older Schwinn singlespeed cruiser frame. Still get looks though, because of my bullhorns. :)

Hack it until it works. :)

thins to consider when using an older frame:
- does the frame has all the bosses, and cable routes for new shifters
- What kind of front derailleur does it take (clamp or brazed)
- will the read spacing (between the 2 rear dropouts) fit your wheels and cassette
- Bottom bracket threading
