looking to replace my smashed up cranks and while I'm at it I thought that I'd bump up a ring size to get more top end since I have a 34t big back sprocket. So I'm looking at a 48t (largest) crank that says that it's compatible with NINE speeds but the bike is EIGHT speeds. I know this sounds like a dumb question but I have been amazed at the tiny things that make a HUGE difference (and the HUGE things that make NO difference) when tinkering with bikes. So, will this ring work?

You should be fine as long as you are still using an 8-speed cassette.
