Touring - Germany: Route from Frankfurt airport to Wursburg

Hi,
I'm biking in Germany in May. I want to bike out of the Frankfurt airport to Wursburg where I'm joining the Romantic Road.

I like mostly off road routes, but can take quiet streets. Please don't advise the German map generation sites as I find them too confusing. A little bit of local knowledge would be great!

Not sure about the route from the airport. But one option for a good route between Frankfurt and Würzburg is the bike route following the river Main (Main-Radweg). It's certainly not the most direct route (210 km) but it's almost all on bike-paths/cycle tracks, it's flat, and the signage should be good. http://www.mainradweg.com/ is the official website but there should be lots more info out there. On the weekends it might be a bit crowded, if the weather is good.

We rode out of Frankfurt east on the major bicycle path along the Main River (Main-Radweg). You can ask at local shops to find it once you are in Frankfurt. We're slow, and it took us three days to reach Wurzberg. We rode through Aschaffenberg, Wertheim, and then finally Wurzberg.

Hi,

what do mean with off road. The "Mainradweg" is a cycle path mostly paved, flat and beside the street, but a few times in bad conditions. Is that what you want?

How many time do you have?

JohnyW is absolutely right. Take the mainradweg all the way. It is ideal.

I'm now in Germany, and managed to find my way. Because of a baggage handler in Toronto who fully deflated my tires and stole my pump, I had to spend the night in Neu Isenburg (near the airport).

It didn't make much sense to head north when Wurzburg was east and south, so I just followed my nose always heading either east or south and sure enough I found the Main river and the Main Radweg.

I'm in Augsburg now. It's rained every day except one, but there is sun in the forecast for the weekend. I'm heading for Fussen tomorrow.

Oh, you are on the Romantische Strasse. Once you get to Fussen, keep going into Austria and Italy on the Via Claudia Augusta, and say hello to the Australian couple on the tandem you will be crossing paths with! :)
