Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Who admits they like mountain bikes?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I honestly hate mountain bike riders. They are your typically joe bob out for a spin around the block on a saturday or they are oakley wearing, camelbak sporting, generation-x'ers going aggro. But to be honest since I've gotten more into track bikes and bikes in general, I've come to appreciate a well built mountain bike. I was thinking about shoppin around for not a single speed but maybe a two speed...if they can even be built? I need something for the hills. I love my track too though.

i was going to get a [rigid] mountainbike until i got impulse bought a road-frame.
the 38mm tyres and mud-guard clearance would have probably been a better idea for city riding.
you could try a cyclocross bike? [for that whole crossover/identity crisis thing]
[maybe i should have thought about that in the first place?]

I love my nine speed with one inch hutchinsons. It has clipless pedals, but they are platform DHs, so it is good to go pick up some bagels and whatnot.
Mountain bikes are great on single trak.
It is a very physical situation. It gets bloody.
It is fun riding through forests, though. It helps you learn what a bike can, and cannot, do.
I honestly hate mountain bike riders. They are your typically joe bob out for a spin around the block on a saturday or they are oakley wearing, camelbak sporting, generation-x'ers going aggro. You are beyond clueless.
I love my 4130 chromoly triple triangle gt single speed conversion. I love it so much that I'm in the process of making it a true single speed conversion after it being a rough 20 minute hackjob conversion, I'm now getting rid of the derailleur hanger, shifter cable braze ons and going over to a full non ramped drivechain with a perfect (with halflink) chainline.
I love my bike, I love riding it, and I plan on thoroughly exploring the local shreveport trails once I get it back to its original (and deserved) glory. Until then its bmx street for me!!!
So yes, I admit it, I like mountain bikes, just not geary dual suspension aluminum gee whiz look at all those gizmos type mtbs.
I like my old MTB. These days it's effectvely a single speed coaster brake road bike with lots of standover clearance. But it's a very nimble and fast ride, and very durable to boot.
Who admits they like mountain bikes?
I like all bikes. Why be divisive? Cyclists unite!
I bought a Specialized HardRock off a guy 6 months ago, and although I know it's a low (lowest?) end bike, I'm considering customizing it. The thing I dislike most about MTB are the straight handle bars. Granted, Im riding in NYC, on a trail its another matter. However, the frame is strong, haven't had any problems with it. Right now Im considering putting drop bars w/ old-style shimano shifters on the neck, might put slick tires on there too to combat the drag. And like they say "Dont hate the playa, hate the game." Don't hate the bike, just the macho dork riding it... ;)

i love mountain bikes. i also love fixies, roadbikes and bmx bikes. old schwinn's have a special place in my heart since i got my start in bike mechanics on them nearly 20 years ago when i was about 10. i would rebuild several in a day and earned my first multi-geared bike this way. i also think anything italian is A POCKET FULL OF AWESOME. things i dislike are suv's and cyclists with elitist attitudes. trackfresh, why don't you just chill out man? take a day and go on a nice long solo ride. a century or something. get some of your anger out. if that doesn't work channel it toward some fat suv bastard. you know too little about bikes to be talking trash. didn't you nearly screw up a phil wood hub because you didn't listen when everyone told you, you had the the wrong lockring. didn't you just learn the difference between tubulars and clinchers. i'm sure you'd probably be a great guy to hang out with, but you seem a little high strung. may be you need to try mountain biking. some fresh air might be good for you.

If you so "honestly hate mountain bike riders", why do you want to be associated with them by getting your very own? Seems to me you are the joe bob out for a spin around the block. Oh wait, you're bike's probably still in the shop. You're too funny! I don't get the bagging on mountain biking and then admitting you want to be part of said group.
I ride bikes, whether it be my single speed mountain bike, my fixie conversion or my Raleigh Chopper Mk1.

I like biking ...... PERIOD. I have two mountain bikes and two road bikes. And by the way I don't have any Oakley's and I'm not a generation x'er.

I really like my old ('96) Gary Fisher Hoo-Koo-Eee-Koo. It's been super sturdy and even and required little maintenance. IT's been a great commuter. However, since going fixed, I find it cumbersome and inefficient. Nevertheless, this winter it will take me to work during the ****ty Chicago winter when I keep my DeBernardi inside for training and safe keeping.

How close do you live to a 'mountain', that you get to see many 'mountain bikers'?.

My mountain bike has full fenders, 2 inch tires in the winter, 1.5 inch the rest of the time. I use toe clips. It has one speed, 36:16. I'm fat, I'm slow, I'm old.
I must admit i like it and almost never use it on a mountain since i live in kansas.

I really get sick of people who think they are all counter-culture by taking one particular facet of an entire culture and disparaging the rest as playing to the mainstream. I've said it in other posts, biking as a sport is NOT mainstream! It may be gaining in popularity since Lance's run, but it is certainly not a reflection of mainstream culture as a whole. It is really annoying to see people actually playing to the mainstream rather than the underrepresented by using stereotypes to keep from learning more about other individuals. I happen to consider mtn biking my #1 main sport, I own a flashy bike and wear spandex and colorful helmet, full-finger gloves and got contacts so I could wear Oakley-type wraps. Does this say anything whatsoever about who I am or what I represent? No--'cause the person driving by (or posting on a forum) doesn't know me, and frankly doesn't seem interested in getting to know me. They'd rather keep their precious preconceived notions and still maintain that they are the *real* representation of biking.
Grow up, trackfresh--you've just insulted a major group of people about which you have no right to generalize. Mtn bikers are you're friends and your neighbors, or they are your highschool bullies. The point is you don't know, but it should be clear that if we are on this forum we have some hope that the cycling culture is one of more decent people than not decent.
And in regards to your question, yes--you can have a two speed. Just put a SS cog in the back (not fixie 'cause you will kill yourself if you seriously want to do some off-roading) and use a Melvin, which is a tensioner you can buy for about $65 from Paul Components. This will work w/ vertical drop-outs as well as horizontal.
I hope that this project, should you begin and/or finish it, will help educate you about the group of which I love being a part.
Oh, and I'm 21 (not a gen-Xer), I don't want Oakley's (I want Native's), I ride 4 times a week (not just on Saturday, which, as everybody knows, is for drinking:)), I don't use a Camelback (I'd rather use a hydration pack in a small day-pack), and I am certainly and most-definitely an aggro kind of guy (except that I'm not).
Okay, time for some coffee...

I saw a guy ride by my house with a nice brand new Fuji...and another guy in my neigborhood has a sweet ass cannodale, both of them are 10-speeds but still love the geometry. I don't see why a bike has to be fixed/SS to love it

Your really need one of everything. I love my old Trek fixed as much as my eight speed M800 (Or my stock or mod or road or unicycle or soon to be singlespeed mtb) They are all good. The favorite right now is an old Haro(ble) I built for the shop guys to ride around in the shopping center, single speed, basket, slicks, and a air-horn.
I really get sick of people who think they are all counter-culture by taking one particular facet of an entire culture and disparaging the rest as playing to the mainstream.
Not the fixie guys, though. They are all different, and unique. That's why they all dress, and act the same!

hey garbage breath, maybe you should think sometime before you open your mouth. you're not into "bikes in general", you poser. i'm sure you're too fat and lazy to ride a single speed mountain bike, let alone a geared one. why don't you take your "track" bike out onto the track then since you're so into them. i would love to hand you your arse in the velodrome. or are you more into wondering if everyone thinks you're as cool as you think you are? why don't you just go back to driving your cabriolet to starbucks instead of your ultra hip fixed gear.
Well, I think I could ride track bike on railroad track...? If I take the tires off :D
You made me sad that I could not find the pic off the internet of a bike powered railroad car. 4 wheels, 6 person vehicle powered by legs....

Fixed gearing it is pre gen X see: QuickSilver, 1986 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091814/ Only 4.7 out of ten, some tools must be voting?
It is also pre whatever generation I am like this guy :)

ever thought about the eople who would rather spend their cash on one ok bike rather than two heaps, or those that can't store two bikes?
Mountain bikes are very flexible, true they may never be as efficient on the road but with a change of tyres they do most duties well.
i have an xc bike that i've used to travel to school and work for over five years, when the weekend comes its off into the hills i go, seems like a pretty good investment to me.

I was impressed until I picked one up... I thought they went to better tubing and a frame design similar to the Stumpjumper, but it feels heavier than I expected. Also at $479 with mediocre 8spd components, you can do better elsewhere.
