View Full Version : riding track pedals without cages

I got a set of track pedals but I don't have the right cages for them yet. I really like the free feeling of not having to be locked in while riding, but I'm usually riding the bottoms of the pedals instead of the tops because the weight balance is messed up without the cages and strap. Any suggestions on how to fix this or other advice?

Mount you new cages the wrong way round, so that if you would clip in you would be riding the backside of the pedal.

Go to a fishing and tackle shop and get some sinkers - tape them to the bottom of your pedals

haha, that backwards cage thing would work though... I like how there is no cage scraping now though. Some weights would probably work too, like you said. thanks.

what's the point of using track pedals if you don't want to use clips? get cheap mtb pedals or something. And they are called CLIPS, not cages.

fix riding without clips or some form of attachment is like riding a freewheel with no brakes

'Cause you have to stop by pedaling backwards (sort of) and this is severely hampered by not having the ability to pull on the pedals as well as push. The clips keep your feet from sliding around and getting pulled into the drivetrain when you slow down or stop.

Of course, if you ride SS, this is not as big a problem.

But you do need brakes...

Gotta remind myself to put a rear brake on my bike:)

'Cause you have to stop by pedaling backwards'

that assumes, of course, you're not riding with brakes.

I agree. Plus if you slip of the front of the pedal and plant your foot on the pavement the rotating crank will have no mercey on your leg...
