Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - just ordered my first bike in 10 years

got the fantom cross 64cm from BD (799.99)... Have been riding a borrowed motobecane 61cm for a couple of months now, while i dialed in my fit. I may change out the stem for a bit shorter one, but am excited to get it out this spring (riding on rollers for now)...

figured i could share here without getting flamed to death... Yes, i will be doing my own work, have been tuning up all of the bikes that i can get my hands on lately, and been reading through Zinn's road cycling book...


am ready to roll (as soon as it arrives). had to ship it to my dad's office so that someone would be available for pickup as i work all day and am not home for signature confirmation :thumb:

p.s. clyde 225# looking to get back to about 205# my baseball playing weight in college, decided to get into biking when my ankles stopped letting me run longer distances (wife and I ran couple of 1/2 marathons)

Excellent, and no, you shouldn't get flamed here for a BDbike. We've had a few Clydes riding them.

when i receive it (hopefully next week) i will document packaging/unpacking/assembly with photos etc, and update any problems that i have in the future for those who are curious.

have given up building 4x4's until the income improves (i.e. wife finishes grad school), and i start paying off my doctorate, but used to do writeups of build progress on those sites, so it takes me back to the good 'ol days doing a build thread lol

Adam - I'll be watching for your review. If I didn't get a great deal on a used TriCross Comp last spring I was looking real close at the bike you ordered. Still considering one for my wife -- hoping to get her riding some more road miles this year (her current "road" bike is an older GF Mtb with slicks).

On a ski forum I read, I have talked with one person who currnently has 3 BD bikes in his family and is very happy with them. I believe they are all MTB's, but I forget. I ordered an IBEX mountain bike for my daughter this past summer -- and IBEX was using basically the same business model as BD without the over-the-top marketing. Very nice bike, excellent price for what we got.

my opinion is if you can't take it apart (and it's actually servicable) and figure out how to put it back togather, don't own it... granted this montra has cost me a couple of other people's throwaway computers, has forced me up late nights as i rebuilt a jeep motor etc lol

Seriously, they need to be rotated forward a bit so there is less strain on your wrists when riding the hoods. Nice bike, one of these days I'm going to buy a Fantom Cross Outlaw.

btw, the outlaw does look pretty sweet!!! i decided against it because i am no familiar with disk brakes and have heard mixed reviews on maintaining/tuning them

Disc brakes are unbelievable. If you want to stop promptly, there's no substitute, no matter how many Kool Stop Salmon pads you install.
