Advocacy & Safety - Reckless driver

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Was not on the bike. Just coming back from XC skiing and stopped at a four way stop sign at which I have around 40 years of non event history. Today as it was my turn to go and a car was stopped on the road to my right I took a quick glance to the left and was just about to move ahead when a young woman in a van with several children went sailing through at 30 mph. I followed her home and asked her if she had not seen the stop sign. She replied in somewhat halting English that she "was not from around here and was very sorry". Guess wherever she was from they don't have stop signs at intersections. Almost missed my birthday Monday. Not to mention the kids in the car. Possibly being a cyclist has made me sensitive to looking where you are going and to those people in cars who don't.
I think cycling has made me a more cautious driver. I actually look at cars rather than just assume the drivers are going to do what they are supposed to do.

. . . I followed her home . . . .
I assume you are in law enforcement and notified dispatch of your actions.
I just assumed he's a free citizen and can come and go as he pleases; one incidence of following someone does not a stalker make, so what's your point?
May have been a bit "hall monitor", but self-appointed cop? Nah.

The very first thing I did when I got home was notify the police. We felt it was our duty to inform not only the police but also the family of the children (who were apparently being dropped off) that someone driving their children was driving so recklessly. I am not in law enforcement. I am also not interested in having people like that on the road.

Since when do you have to be a cop to drive where you want and talk to someone? He didn't try to arrest her.

Even if he did isn't there such a thing in the USA called a citizens arrest?

In Canada a citizens arrest can only be done while the crime is being commited. Recently a shopkeeper in Toronto was charged with kidnap etc, when he caught a person who had earlier shoplifted some flowers from his store.
Passing a stop sign is not a criminal offense
