I had a new bottom bracket installed on my Langster today, the bike shop guy said the stock BB is a real piece of garbage. The loud cracking and creaking sound is gone now, thank God. I took it for a 20 mile ride in Central Park just to try it out and it was beautifully quiet, just the hum of the chain and the freewheel cog spinning.

The bike shop guy also said Specialized will be offering the Langster in 2005, the same specs and all, but they'd hiked the price tag up by $150.00 this year. I wonder if the paint job is different though.

I've heard good and bad on the Langster.
I had looked into getting one awhile back, but they were sold out.

What are the reasons not to get one?

It is made out of aluminum and it has cheap, crappy components. The bianchi pista is a better deal in terms of quality/price ratio, but better still to spend a little more to buy a frame and build it up with quality components.

ditto nycpistarider. i test rode it but went with a pista, which is a much better overall deal. the langster's ride is much more harsh due to the aluminum frame and especially fork. although the pista will need upgrading and has its own drivetrain issues/noise, i've heard the langster has a very crappy bb and is prone to immediate and serious pita creaking. also, the langster is set up as a freewheel ss with f/r brakes, although i think it has a flip flop hub. i mean, why buy a ss and not go all the way? what's the use? in sum, the langster (non-sworks) is a road bike which happens not to have more than one gear. the other complete bikes (fuji, khs, bianchi) are legit track bike fix's, more true to form. although, as you will hear, there's nothing more satisfying than building your own . . . .

But you will never have a good horizontal dropout like a track bike....<?>
