I have an opportunity to buy a 1996 Trek 7900 Multitrack for $300, which seems like a good value, but I'm a little skeptical about the carbon/aluminum composite frame. I'm looking for a used hybrid mainly for short commute, with capability to ride on gravel, etc., and I'd prefer to spend less than $200. Any thoughts on this bike and/or alternatives? I'm thinking maybe I'll hold out until a 700-level multitrack becomes available locally.
Thanks.

Solid bike with good components. Check the frame for deep scratches/gouges, if there are any walk. A gouge in a carbon frame that hits the weave is deep enough to compromise the frame. Other than that the bike has great components and it's a good price. If all's good, and importantly - if it fits, buy it.
