Why would you drink Bud, or, god forbid, Bud Light or any of the other equally horrendous beer like substances? We had some incredible beer yesterday, stuff that is so flavorful, aromatic, and sensual that I simply do not understand the fascination with crap beer. Why would you pollute your body with things that taste like artificially beer flavored water? If you're gonna pollute your body, at least make it a good experience.

No, no, no. You boil crabs in it.

I rarely drink these days. When I do, it's usually barley wine, or similar.
I don't like heavily roasted grain any more than I like heavily roasted coffee.
When I brewed, I would sometimes use 3 cans of light or red syrup (often one red and 2 light).
I used a lot of hops, but cooked them only briefly, I wasn't aiming for bitterness or an
overbearing hop flavor, but for that rich aroma that is reminiscent of Fall.

One bottle was enough. I think most of them were over 10%.

There's a lot more beer out there than American micro-brews. Bud is hovering around $6 for a 6 pack and for only a couple bucks more, you can buy a very nice beer so the cost savings is only really relevant if you're drinking a ****-ton of beer.

BTW, piss will also quench your thirst, but I'm not about ready to put that down my throat.

There are occasions when I could go for a Bud Light Lime. It's gotta be right close to a hundred degrees outside and the beer's gotta be on the verge of being frozen, so you don't get too much of that nasty ricey aftertaste.

Only one per sitting, and enjoyed quickly, however.

I wish Yuengling was available out here. I've never even seen it at the fancy bottle shoppes. You'd think if they could get kegs down to Key West, Fla., they could get kegs to Portland, OR! They're likely afraid of the competition. Iron City made a big push here a couple years ago, trying to put a dent in PBR's cheep beer stranglehold.

I think Yuenglings is totally worth it. Somewhere between Bud and Heineken on the price scale, IIRC, but tastier than either.

Red Stripe is a very good lager and just a few bucks more than Bud and available most places. Stella Artois is another good beer at a reasonable price and availability as is Pilsner Urquell. Rogue has some very good beer. Bell's is, unfortunately, not available to a lot of places but their beer is top notch. Tetleys and Boddingtons are two of my favorite popular English beers. They are a little pricier in that you only get a 4 pack, but again, if you're not drinking a sixer a night, it shouldn't make much of a difference. Every state has their own unique micro-brews, some more refined than others, but there should be a lot of choices locally as well. I would say that anyone willing to dismiss "many American micro-brews" is someone who has made up their minds based on a limited sample.

Try a Red Stripe the next time it gets hot. It's a far better beer, still on the light side, not insanely expensive, and you don't have to suck it down like a thirsty horse at a water trough.

LesterOfPuppets

I only drink Red Stripes when I'm in or near Jamaica. The last one I had was while visiting Grand Cayman. Must've been 2006.

My favorite hotter than hell midsummer's day mid-ride brew is a 9 oz glass of Tecate with fruit at the B-Side tavern. Bud Light Lime from the 7-11 is right below that in popularity. My local 7-11 doesn't carry Red Stripe, so it's just not going to happen on a regular basis.

Because you're hot and it's cold
Because a light beer doesn't drag you down
Because it's cheap enough to share with friends
Because it's all your buddy has in the fridge and it's taboo to complain about free beer

You know I like good beer, but if I'm offered a domestic I won't turn up my nose at it...I'll just have the one while I'm figuring out where else I urgently need to be. Sometimes the company is good enough the beer doesn't matter. I've also been known to stock my shop beer fridge with domestics for those that prefer them.

Iron City made a big push here a couple years ago, trying to put a dent in PBR's cheep beer stranglehold.

There always was a certain cachet to calling out, " Another bottle of Iron, barkeep."

Anybody know of any other brewery that had "Offense" and "Defense" cans with numbers of the local NFL players on the cans? Iron City even packaged their beer labeled as Penguin Beer for those weirdos who like hockey.

My neighborhood grocery (which has a typical selection for our area) has a lot of beers that are about $8 per six pack that are a much higher quality than Bud and others of that ilk. For personal drinking, I tend to try the various beers in that range. For mass drinking (many people), I tend to stick with the mainstream stuff because people are less apt to complain. Plus, I feel that it's not worth the extra money to get high-end brews when most people will be perfectly happy with schlock stuff. I may have a few beers that are higher end, but the majority will be the cheapie stuff.

Ahh, that makes sense. Gotta keep those retirees and spring breakers from Yuengling territory well sated when they visit or move to Fla.

As much as I wish for Yeungling availability here, perhaps it's better only having it once in a while. Anchor Steam is a perfectly viable substitute, albeit harder to find in Portland, OR than Yuengling is in NYC.

One thing to remember is that people like consistency in most cases. We will choose that evil that we know, versus the unknown.

In order to mass produce any foodstuff, some corners must be cut. There is only so much choice hops, barley etc, out there. To get large quantities of similar ingredients, the mass producers of beer cannot demand the very best, as it is in limited supply and would make the product too expensive.

Yes, you can find some great beer out there, but are you willing to pay the price to drink it every day, as many drinkers of Bud Light do.

Just my two ounces on the subject.

Why would anybody care what kinds of beers are liked by others?
